RENEW POLICIES
$55,000 In War Insur
ance Re-Instated Thru
Red Cross
Miss Ruth Clark, secretary of the
home service section of the Red Cross
here, stated Saturday that eight men
m Sumter county had re-instatea
their government insurance, in the
amount of $55,000 as a result of the
re-instatement drivh just staged by-
John D. Mathis post, American Le
gion. Other work done by the home
service section during the past month
includes the forwarding of 9 appli
cations hiade by former service for
compensation under the terms of the
war risk insurance act and 3 applica
tions for vocational training advan
tages.
Two former soldiers who have paid
upon but never received Liberty
Bonds for which they subscribed
enlisted the aid of the Red Cross here
to secure these, and 3 soldiers still
in service, who have dependents, were
assisted in securing dicharges.
Twenty-even made applications
either for unpaid allotments, back
pay, additional pay or refunds of
amounts due them by the government,
all being aided by the Red Cross. In
addition Miss Clark made 79 visits
to families of soldiers, or consulted
lawyers or physicians in their inter
est. She also compiled the military
records of 19 former service men,
and mailed form letters to 250 form
er soldiers urging them to avail them
selves of advantages accruing to them
because of their military service.
A NERVOUS WRECK
From Three Years’ Suffering. Says
Cardui Made Her Well.
Texas City, Tex.—ln an interesting
statement, Mrs. G. H. Schill, of this town,
says: “For three years I suffered untold
agony with my head. I was unable to
do any of my work.
I just wanted to sleep all the time, for
that was the only ease I could get, when
I was asleep. I became a nervous wreck
just from the awful suffering with my
head.
1 was so nervous that the least noise
would make me jump out of my bed. 1
had no energy, and was unable to do
anything. My son, a young boy, had to
do all my household duties.
1 was not able to do anything until I
took Cardui. 1 took three bottles in all,
and it surely cured me of those awful
headaches. That has been three years
ago, and I know the cure is permanent,
for I have never had any headache since
taking Cardui. ..
Nothing relieved me until I took Cardui.
It did wonders for me.”

THE BOOK OF ANN
How Would a “Divorce Card” Look
With My Name On It?
Dear Daddy Lorimer was con-!
vinced that he had saved Ann from’
a big scandal by buying the decorat-!
ing business and ridding the town of|
its decorative manager. Daddy felt
sure that he had solved all the intol-i
erable problems Ann had introduced
into the Lorimer affairs. Ann.had'
had her lesson—a humiliating one, I
he said.
I was not so confident about dad-,
dy’: success. But I didn’t put my:
doubt into words because daddy was >
so awfully happy over his own clev- |
erness. Neither did I tell him hoWj
completely Ann had destroyed my
joy m life.
After daddy left me, 1 put in a
miserable day. I couldn’t shorten the
time until Bob should come home
by any active employment; 1 could
not make up Bob’s bed nor arrange
hi: room as he liked it, for there
was a new maid to attend to every
thing.
1 cduldn’t go away from home;
Bob might repent and call me by
phone. It w r ould be a tragedy to
miss any chance of “making up.”
1 didn’t want to see company; it
would hurt dreadfully to wrench my
mind from the circle of my own af
fairs.
I employed myself as all good
wives in similar circumstances, I
suppose. I darned Bob’s socks, se>."d
on all his loose buttons, looked over
his collection of neckties and threw
away the frayed ones. Then I put
the drawers of his chiffonier in
order.
Bob doesn't keep a valet. In the
old time of his radical thinking—
before the war—he had discharged
his man. He said he didn’t feel like
a free and independent human being
when another man drew his bath
every morning. After his army ex
perience, he was more democratic
than ever.
Baby’s Food.
The high mortality of infants (one
out of three) is due very largely to
the fact that the baby cannot select
its own food, as does the adult, but
must take what is given it. Often the
food is inferior in quality, or even
positively poisanius.
How can the mother tell whether
the baby’s food is right?
One way is to watch the actions.
If they are regular and natural and
the baby is gaining in weight, the
food is all right. Constipation and
diarrhoea both indicate indigestion
and should have immediate atten
tion.
To correct indigestion and regu
late the stomach and bowels the baby
specialists have perfected a gentle
laxative and regulator called “Baby
Ease” laxative, which the mother
may obtain, with full directions, at
any drug store. “Baby Ease” is an
invaluable aid to the baby’s health,
and no mother should be without it
for emergencies.
Do not use the strong and irritat
ing laxatives such as are commonly
used, nor anything containing opiates
or powerful drugs. They irritate the
delicate organs and lead to chronic
indigestion and constipation. “Baby
Ease” laxative is a corrective and
regulator as well as a gentle laxa
tive, and will promptly and perma
nently correct indigestion, colic,
diarrhoea and constipation. The
mother should then look carefully
to the purity, freshness and whole
someness of the baby’s food, the
cleanliness of the bottles, etc., and
should consult the physician if the
child does not steadily gain in weight.

I have always been so glad that 1
appreciate Bob’s brand of democ-|
racy. It’s a great comfort to realize
that if I die. or if we are ever di-;
vorced—and Bob should marry again |
—he probably will not find a wife!
who will sympathize with his advanc-l
ed views as I do!
“If ever we are divorced I”
Whenever we two have the least;
little bit of a tiff I think of that hor
rid possibility. Divorces are so com
mon in the nicest families!
Only two days ago a new thing
in “card etiquet” came in our mail.
It was the announcement of a
divorce; a beautifully engraved bit
of pasteboard a trifle larger than a;
woman’s calling card. It read:
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bryce Aller
Mutually Announce Their
Divorce.
Bob had given the card his seri-!
ous attention.
“Well, why not?” he said, “If peo
ple consider you interested in their
wedding, so that they send you cards!
to say they are going to be married'
at a certain time, and set up house-:
keeping together in a certain place,:
obviously, they ought to inform you!
when they break up their establish-,
ment. First-class idea, this divorce
announcement, seems to me!”
As I sewed the buttons on Bob’s
pongee shirt, I wondered how such
a card would look with Bob’s name!
and mine in the first line! The idea
was too dreadful! My imagination
was getting the better of my rea-|
son. I knew I could bring on a grand!
fit of histeria unless I exercised a
little restraint.
“All of my worries have been
caused by a girl who hasn’t an atom
of sense.” So ran my thoughts. “Two
months ago I had never heard of
Ann. She simply walked into this
family—and because she hasn’t any
ideals at all she has kept us stirred
up ever since she married our Jim.
She may fool daddy, but not me
Goodness knows what she’ll be up
to next. She’ll get herself arrested,
maybe.”
