THE BOOK OF ANN
Ann Had Never Thought of the Seri
ousness of Her Relation With
Ives
“It’s obvious that a woman shot
Ives,'' I said. “Unless a man were
cleverly disguised, he couldn’t have
entered the women’s wing of the
bathhouse. The nolice were searching
the roor.is when we left the grounds
By this l tim- > the. will have entered

with the gun in her hand. They will
have forced the door of your com
partment, they will have found your
striking bathing suit and the gun. Are
you following me? - ’
Ann nodded.
“That gorgeous bathing suit with
Bryson’s label is one clue. The police
will miss the key to your compart
ment. That’s another clue. Murderers
have been traced b., less important
objects/’ 1 corvtinuidv “And have
been sent to the electric chair.”
Ann looked at me with horrified
eyes. I was truly sorry to persecute
her with such detail?, but they just
slipped off my tongue before I could
stop them.
“Then they'll find out what Ives
was doing this morning—yesterday—
the past week—all the women he’s
been seen with for a year, maybe.
They will connect you with him, be
lieve me. They can’t help it. They
will find the messenger who carried
the note to you. Ann Lorimer, where
were you when he handed you that
note?’’
“Writing letters at the table under
the pergola,” Ann motioned toward
the big house.
“How did the boy know you?”
“He was an errand hpy for Ives at
the store. He—had brought notes to
me—before,” she stammered.
“Have you the last one—still?”
“I destroyed it as soon as I had
read it. Seems to mr you’re asking a
lot of silly questions.”

you my dear. Just what do you intend
to say when the police face you and
ask you what was in the letter Claude
Ives wrote to you the day he was
shot?”
Ann shivered. “I don’t know,” she
' wailed.
j “Then you’d better think. You’ve
' got a good story as it is. If you tell
it straight and stick to it, it will either
, save or—damn you. That depends a
| good deal on the kind of men who
: hear it. Ordinary men will not believe
' your connection with Ives was as—as
j innocent as 1 know it was. They’d
jump to the Conclusion that you had
a motive for shooting Ives —the most
scandalous of reasons. They’ll say you
shot him for revenge—for destroying
your reputation—for spoiling your
life. Do you understand what I mean?’
“I never thought! 1 never thougt!”
moaned the poor child.
“That’s exactly what Chrys and I
said about you at first. We never hat
ed you, Ann. But we did say that a
girl who couldn't or wouldn’t think
about the seriousness of marriage
hadn’t any right to wed our Jim. Now
—it’s too late for your thinking to do
you—or us—much good. Tell me one
thing more: Had the clip in the gun
been used?”
“How many times had the gun been
fired, do you mean?” ,
“Yes.’
“How should 1 know? Jim always
loaded it. It hadn’t been used since
he and 1 were practicing in the mead
ow next the park when he was home.
We were interrupted. He saw an air
plane overhead and stopped shooting
to watch it. Then some friends whirl
ed up the drive. We went to the house
to greet them. Jim said he didn’t
want a lot of idiots fooling with an
automatic. Maybe he had fired the
whole clip. Maybe* the gun wasn’t
loaded at all, today!”
“You said it was, when 1 asked
you, in your room, this morning.”
“I spoke carelessly. I really don’t
know. 1 just supposed it was. Some
times one speaks without thinking.
You know that yourself.”
“One does,” I admitted. “But I
wish you had known—and had told
me the exact truth this morning.’

MISS STOVALL’S
HONORSEARNED
Career of Georgia Pian

Meteoric
Miss Frances Stovall, who will ap

Clark, of Americus, Friday evening
at the Opera House, has had a re
markable as well as meteoric career
during the few years she has appear
ed before the public. The story of
how a young Atlanta girl, still in her
teens, competing for’honors as a
pianist with four of the best young
pianists in the United States before
an audience of two thousand of the
foremost musicians and club women
of the country at Birmingham two
years ago, and how she held her own
with the very best of them, is an
honor that falls to but few in life,
especially in one who is as young as
Miss Stovall.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. T. J. Stovall, of Atlanta, and
has a family connection with some
of the most prominent families in
Americus. Her mother formerly resid
ed in Americus, and is well known and
greatly beloved among a wide cir
cle of friends in this section. Thus,
Miss Stovall does not come to Amer
icus as a stranger, but rather as one
her friends will delight to honor.
Miss Stovall has not only played
before large and brilliant audiences
in Birmingham and Atlanta, but in
1917 won the honors for the south
eastern district in a spirited contest
at Chattanooga, Tenn., with her near
est rival, a young man of consider
able concert experience. When she
