Once the most popular of presi
dents, Wilson has ceased to be so
His uppopularity was shown in the
congressional elections two years,
ago and it has been reflected in the ■
decline of the Democratic vote in ev
ery election held since then.
Why the White House does not lay
the ghost of a Wilson third term
nomination is known to all inside ad
ministration politicians. The Presi
dent wants to retain his influence
as long as possible. The moment he
announces that he is out of all pos
sible consideration in the coming
race, that moment he loses nine
tenths of the prestige and power of
the Presidential office.
President Wilson wants to be his
party’s “leader” at this convention.
In other words, not necessarily of
fensive, he wants to “boss” it. He
wants to dictate the League of Na
tions plank in the platform and to
see that the convention puts up a
candidate whom he can endorse.
This is not saying that President
Wilson is trying to nominate W. G.
McAdoo or Mitchell Palmer. One

On practically all the above issues
• President Wilson is opposed by Wm.

much about the Government owner

1 the “moist” issue he is ready to fight
to the death. So there is bound to
be a clash and a test of strength be
tween the Wilson administration on
the one side and Bryan on the other.
After this test it will soon become
evident who is the administration’s
candidate for the nomination. In
any event, however, it will not be
Wilson.

“You kin drive th’ Democratic mule

with a figure like Dan’l Boone, as
he drew forth a flat flask from his
hip pocket.

One reason given for the con

it won’t get Unmanageable. This
won’t work if they change it to a

Sightseeing by jitney bus is a rare

San Francisco is one of the few

The acoustics of the big audi

was, “I Hear You Calling Me,”
which shows that the audience must
have been largely made up of can
