THE BOOK OF ANN.
Mother and I Enjoy Our Work in
Ann's Witchen.
“You’d think the world was com
ing to an end just because some wo
men can not get enough help to run
the service end of their homes,” said
Mother Lorimer, as we arranged a
frozen dessert on chilled silver dishes.
“Never has it been so difficult for
housekeepers with big incomes to get
the help required to run a well-or
dered establishment.”
“And they’re so indignant—that
it’s funny,” I observed. “It doesn’t
seem to occun to them that they
might do a little of the work them
selves! Why, our experience in
cooking Ann’s luncheon today makes
me feel like a human being!” I de
clared as the girl disappeared through

“I must own that I’m awfully tired,
Jane!” said motner.
“You need your tea. Let’s have
our lunch here—on this charming
white enameled glass-covered* kitch
en table—fit for a king!”
So down we sat to a most excellent
meal. I felt like telephoning to Bob!
to join us, but mother needed her tea
immediately.
“I’ve been thinking of what young
Mrs. Johnson said yesterday,” said
Mother Lorime£ “She came to see
me and she bragged at some length
about her own success in keeping her
help.”
“What is her magic?” I asked.
“Money is not enough nowadays!”
“It seems that the cook expects
Mrs. Johnson to lunch at the club
two or three times a week.”
“So Mrs. Johnson goes?”
“To be sure she does. And the
cook tolerates dinner guests only oc
casionally. Mr. Johnson takes them
to a club or a hotel as a rule! And
the family is served with breakfast
only, on Sundays!”
“Home! Sweet Home!” I hummed.
“Mrs. Johnson is never hard on her
help, I’ve heard. Looks to me as if
her help was rather hard on her!”
“Everybody knows about Mrs. Bar
ton’s troubles,” mother continued.
“She is a ‘particular’ housekeeper,
you know. Her personal income is
SI,OOO a month, my dear, but she
has been cooking for herself all the
spring. Couldn’t go to a hotel on
account of her old mother, who is
something of an invalid, and who
hates hotels. Nobody will stay with
Mrs. Barton, now that there are
enough excellent places to go around.
Her house is isolated, too. That is,
rather far from the movies. Conse
quently, such meals as Mrs. Barton’s
tamily have had at home lately, they
have eaten in the kitchen.”
At this 1 giggled. I couldn’t imag
ine the supercillious Mrs. Barton
moving about a stove or dishing up
boiled potatoes. |-
“An absolute fact,” insisted
mother.
“Mother, I wish all these city wo-,
men, who think the world is coming!
to an end because they have to work
a little, could be forced to see what
the farm women are up against.
They’re getting up at 5 a. m., and
they’re working more than 13 hours,
in summer time. I heard Willie Van
Eyck telling about it the other day.
! She owns a farm, you know. She
! isn’t well, so her father gave it to
her, as a kind of plaything. And now,
she spends all of her summers there |
—she sees how the wives of the farm
ers have to work. But she is so ex-i
cited about it that next winter she is
going to begin a course at an agricul
tural college!”
“The world is changing in ways we
can hardly follow, my dear. Many
women who have been trained to
iwork are soldiering on their jobs, i
And many others who are privileged
to do nothing, have chosen strenuous
careers.
“Like Deborah Burns and Willie
Van Eyck!” I suggested.
“And like Jane Lorimer!” said
mother, as she rose from the table
and deposited a little kiss on my
forehead.
“Working is such fun for me! I
explained.
Then said mother:
“It could be fun for most of us, if
we would look at it so!”

Ludicrous Barnes
Time Law Repealed
ATLANTA, July 24.—-A bill re
pealing the famous Barnes time law
has been passed unanimously by the
House of Representatives. The ob
ject of the Barnes time law was to
establish eastern time as the single
standard of time throughout the state
of Georgia. The federal authorities
had previously established eastern
time for the eastern part of the state
and central time for the western half
of the state, and the Barnes time law
could not be enforced in contraven
tion of the time regulations fixed in
Washington.
Representative Barnes took a hu
morous view of the situation when
his repealing bill came up for action
in the house. He explained that his
object had been a worthy one, but
instead of ending the confusion caus
ed by two time standards, his law
created additional confusion, and
therefore, he thought it should be re
pealed. The house unanimously
agreed with him and passed his re
pealing bill without a dissenting vote.

Mrs. Mathis Unable to
Get Early Ship Home
J. E. Mathis has received a let
ter from Mrs: Mathis, who is visiting
her parents in Northern England,
stating that she has thus far been
unable to obtain booking for return
home earlier than Oct. 23, although
she is still trying. She had intended
coming the first of September and
meeting Mr. Mathis at New York,
from which place they planned to go
on a pleasure trip of a couple of
weeks before returning to Americus.
She states that, while the vessels
leaving America are crowded, there is
apparently as great a demand or
greater for passage coming this way.
She states also that eggs are Selling
at 10 cents each and strawberries at
.50 cents per pound over there. Cloth
ring is much cheaper than here, how
ever. In one of her recent letters
.she mentioned that “it is 11 p. m. and
the sun is just going down,” which
is not a matter of surprise when the
northern latitude of Northern Eng
land is considered.
Christian Church For

W. A. Joyner announces that a
meeting of members of the Christian
church, or Church of Christ, residing
here will be held at the courthouse at
11 o’clock today for the purpose of
discussing a proposal to set up a con
gregation of this denomination here.
According to Mr. Joyner, there are
25 members of this church residing in
Americus and it is planned to estab
lish a church shortly.
