SHIRT ON POLE
SAVEDS-SCREW
Own Efforts and Not
Buoy Brought Rescue
Os Men
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 4—The
U. S. submarine S-5 went to the bot
tom of the Atlantic Wednesday be
cause a large air intake valve failed
to close when the boat made a prac
tice dive, it was stated in an official
report on the accident made by the
Commander of the destroyer Beaver.
The report disclosed it was largely
through the eff ~rts of the imprison
ed men and not the telephone buoy;
as at first reported, that the men '
were saved. The crew learned that!
the stern of the ship was -above the
water, gouged a small hole through
the iron hull end thrust out a pole
with a white undershirt tied to it.
They then wigwagged distress signals
which wore seen by the steamer At
lantus 2 7 hours later. After a large
hole had been drilled in the upstand-!
ing stern by members of the crew of I
the transport General Goethals. the !
men weer taken from their prison.
Fast Ansley Pacer Goes
Lame on Grand Circuit
That his sensational young pacer,
Lecco Grattan, picked up a pebble
and went lame during a heat ip To
ledo three weeks ago, after’ several
great races on the Grand Circuit,
was the word which Chas. L. Ansley
brought back to Americus Friday af
ter a visit to the northeast, during
which he attended some of the
Grand Circuit meets, hoping to see
his entry in action. The horse, un
der the tutelage of the veteran, Pop
Geers, of Macon, was retired for
the time being while being brought
around into shape, and is expected
to be able to start again at Colum
bus, 0., in two weeks. It is feared
the lay-off in mid-season, during
which he could be given no hard
work, will prevent him fro mmaking
any very -fast time for the remain
der of the season. He is expected
to be ready so rfaster company at
the opening of next season.
Dr. E. T. Mathis was in Albany-
Friday on a business mission.

■BUNK’ PRAISES
MOUNTAIN DEW
Interesting Yarns Being
Told of Candidate’s
Speeches
ATLANTA, Sept. 4.—They are
telling some mightly interesting sto
ries about the fe wspeeches that John
R (Bunk) Cooper, of Macon, is
making in the senatorial race. He
has made very few to date, but ex
cerps from one recently delivered
at Calhoun, in Gordon county, have
reached political circles here, and it
is a scream from those who do not
take their politics as a ilfe and death
matter.
For instance, Mr. Cooper referred ‘
to Governor Dorsey as “Darsey,” and
seemed to have a grudge against the
governor because he did not appoint
a judge for his circuit at the new
salary recently voted by tne legis
lature.
Speaking of liquor, which he ad
vocates strenuously, the Bibb states
man is said to have promised his
mountain hearers “more and better"
wet goods if he is elected, and wines
galore when taey found occasion to
visit him in Washington.
“You folks up here have mighty
good pure corn whiskey,” he said,
“and do not know what it is to have
to drink the sluff they sell down our
way. The liquor we get will run -
