THE BOOK OF DEBORAH.
Can the Intelligence Be Tricked By
a Man’s Emotions.
Never will I forget the glimpse
of Deborah Burns holding the bride
roses in her loosely clasped fingers
and gazing at the photograph of Jim
Lorimer. There was the intensity
kof consecration in her eyes. I had
Fseen iit in them once before, when
she had murmured, as we stood in
my blue garden:
“Families, like some flowers, run
out!”
Up in Ann’s Eden, poor Deb seem
ed to be renewing a vow never to
love any man since she had no right
to love him.
I retreated softly, thinking:
“Deb is the finest kind of a’ girl!
She never will throw prudence away,!

she never will break a convention,!
but she will break her own heart!
I’ts perfectly absurd of her to go on
loving without being loved in return
for the rest of her days.”
I sat down in the lower hall while
Chrys directed Jappe where ,tc bank
some immense roses of Sharon and
my mind went on:
Deb is as genuine as her complex-,
ion. Ann is as artificial as her ex-i
pensive imported cosmetics. Never
theless, our clear-thinking, far-see-i
ing Jimmy-boy fell for the sham!
The more I think about what love is,i
the less I know about it. Sometimes
I fancy there no such thing. Did I
Jimmy actually prefer the sham?!
Can a man’s emotions trick his in-!
telligence?”
Chrys and Jappe and the roses I
of Sharon faded out as my thought,
becam'e personal:
“I cannot trick myself about my
love for Bob. I love him—and that
is all there is to it! It may be ut
terly silly to love in vain, as Deb is
destined to do, but I confess that
I’d rather love my husband ’in vain,
—and be absolutely unhappy forever |
—than be satisfied with the love of!
any other man on earth.”
The floral tribute to the return
ing honeymooners being in place,
Chrys came toward me.
“Let’s get Deb away before Jimi
comes,” I said to Chrys as if she
were well posted concerning the state,
of Deb’s affection.
“You’re right, Jane. We’ll all go
and let Jim and Ann enter their
Paradise unobserved. Call Deb!
But Deborah was not upstairs nor
anywhere in the house. I made my
report to Chrys.
“Your second name ought to bjj
‘cynic,’ ” I said to my sister-in-law.
“My dear, I’m only disillusioned!”
said Chrys. “I used to think that
love begets love and that true love!
comes but onte —and lasts fofever!”
“Most girls are sure of all that
for once in their lives!”
“Yes! And they waste oodles of

matic gesture.
“Deb will never do that. She is
just out of college, remember!”
“Consequently she is fed up with
new theories about mind and the
i emotions including love and how to
control it! Do you expect a theory
to help her out of her misery?”
“I’ll trust her common sense,” I
protested.
“Nonsense! She may be able to
commit emotional and intellectual
suicide but don’t fool yourself! In
spite of my ‘cynicism’ I know that
she never can kill her love for Jim!”

Ned McLendon Loses
Barn and Feed by Fire
The large barn of Ned McLendon,
together with its entire contents, was
destroyed by-fire Thursday night.
Mr. McLendon resided on the P. T.
Hoilloway place, on the Americus-
Friendship road, midway between
Concord and Friendship. It burned
so rapidly that it was with great
difficulty the live stock were saved.
The loss falls heavily on Mr. Mc-
Lendon, as he had already gathered
and stored a large qauntity of feed
stuff, and that with all farm tools
and machinery were a complete loss.
