THE BOOK OF DEBORAH.
To Guard Bob, 1 Lie About the Pre«-
ence Os That Handkerchief.
I had to see those hateful initials
with my own eyes.
“*K. 0. M.”’ I repeated. “Well,
girls, we all know who that is,” I
added defiantly.
“And I—l thought that Bob Lori
mer was so different from lots of
, men,” Ann stammered. “So he is!”
. I protested loyally. “Bob can ex
-1 plain how this handkerchief happen
! ed to be here.”
i But I did not add that no expla
, nation he could make would ever
’ satisfy me. I had accepted his rea
' son for going to Katherine, but I
: couldn’t see that as the guardian of
' her child. Bob also became the cus-
I todian of her heavily scented hand
• kerchief! The thing was a love-tok-
I en, if ever I saw one of the kind.
The incident stunned me, but even;
i as it did so, my wifely fealty assert
i ed itself. And I lied! Never would■
' I have fibbed to protect myself, but
without hesitation, to guard my hus
band, I told a deliberate untruth:
“You see, I asked Bob to get a
sample of that Belgian girl’s work
i from Katherine. You see—-I—Pm
going to have her embroider a dozen
i for—for Mother Lorimer’s Christ
mas!” I took a long breath. “That
is, if I like the sample!”
“Why didn’t you go over and see
the Belgian girl herself? She must
have lots of different patterns!”
i queried the practical Ann, as she
peered over the beastie which she
cuddled in her neck.
Ann may be silly, but she has a
■ canny instinct in a love affair, and
a cruel curiosity and carelessness.
“Katherine was over here the oth
er day,” I continued, “ T borrowed
this—it was so handy! And T gave
it to Bob to take back to her!”
Thus I tangled my statements. The
art of lying is too fine for me.
We went downstairs. I dragged
’ behind the others because I was
thinking o f how Bob would condemn
I me for teHing the least little bit of
a fib! Whv should I tell a whopper
—to save his reputation I couldn’t
tell, but I didn’t regret what I had
. done.
Deb went home before luncheon.
She perceived, I fancy, that it would
be best for me to be alone. Ann’s
perception was less acute. She stay
• ed to chatter about Deb’s matri
monial prospects.
“I don’t believe Ted Moore ever
J will have the courage to propose to
; Deb,” she averred.
“Because he’s so poor? And she’s
’ so rich?”
“Exactly! And if Ted doesn’t ask
her pretty soon, Paul Van Eyck will
grab her off!” Ann continued.
“You’ll see the Burns and Van
Eyck fortunes united before many
moons,” Ann perisisted. “They are
saying at the clubs that Van never
fails in anything he attempts. His
yachts, his horses, his dogs take all
: the first prizes!”
“Nonsene! Deb will die a spinster!”
I I protested.
"So they think he is sure to win
a wife who is a prize-winner!”
“Just so! The club bets are turn
ing in Van’s favor! I’m awfully sor
ry for Ted! Awfully! But I’m off.
Sweetsie must have him’s dinny!”
Ann ran down the steps, then on
an impulse, she reached back to my
side.
“Say, Jane! Now Deb has gone,
we needn’t pretend, you know. Don’t
make yourself sick over that hand
kerchief! I’m awfully sorry Ginger
found it!”
“You needn’t be,” I replied. I
want the truth —even when it hurts!”
“Jane, your’re a real sport!” Ann
said in one of her serious moods,
which is so out of harmony with her
petite person and her juvenile
clothes.
“A real sport? No! I’m not! I’m
a fool!” I said savagely.

Americus Reported Se

Pepsi-Cola Co.
According to reports reaching this
city, the Pepsi-Cola Co., whose home
offices and principal syrup manufac
turing plant are located at New
Bern, N. C., contemplates locating a
big bottler’s syrup distributing depot
and modern bottling planat in Amer
icus in the near future.
The information received here is
to the effect that the company is
now selling a million and a half dol
lars stock issue, from the proceeds
of which several modern manufactur
ing and distributing plants are to be
erected in the course of the next
few months, and this city has bmeen
selected as a pivotal point for the lo
cation of one of these plants to sup
ply the trade locally and the bottlers
throughout the surrounding territory,
numerous applications for bottling
franchises having been received
from individuals in the nearby
towns. The o ...cials of the company
are convinced that this will be one
of the most satisfactorv points for
their plant and the distribution of
syrup.
It is estimated that the plant which
may be located here will cost when
completed and ready for operation,
SIOO,OOO or more, and this will prove
a valuable adjunct to the ub nsiseein
a valuable adjunct to the business
interests of this plaee. Representa
tives of the company are, it is said,
to come here in the course of the

O. ..cials of the Pepsi-Cola Com
pany state that their business has
grown so rapidly in the past few
years and their bottling plants have
become so numerous over a wide ter- i
ritory. with hundreds of apollcations
for hott’ing franchises from pros
pective boti'ers in every state in the
union, it is impossible to give prompt
service in the matter of syrup ship
ments, the railroads being unable in
many instances to handle shipments
in an expedient manner. It has,
therefore, become necessary for them
to locate syrup manufacturing plants
in several of the large cities and sy
rup distributing depots and modern
ly equipped bottling planats ata a
number of advantageously located
points. When these plans have been
earned out bottlers can be served in
a much more satisfactory manner.
