JUDGE W.B.
LAMAR’S PECAN
GROVES
ABOUT 1,400 TREES.

SCHLEY, STUART, FROT-

52 Acres Right in the Edge Os
Town —20 Acres On the Bai
ley Place and 6 Acres Near D.
H. Gilbert’s Residence.
We visited this week the splendid
budded pecan grove of Judge W. B.
Lamar, lying just northeast of Mon
ticello and part of it being in the
corporate limits. Judge Lamar has
in all about eighty acres in fine pecan
trees, 52 acres in the grove visited,
20 acres in the Bailey place on the
Waukeenah road, and 6 acres near
Mr D. H. Gilbert’s residence. He
has planted only the finest varieties,
such as the Schley, Stuart, Frotscher,
Pabst and Delmas. Thirty acres of
these trees are twelve years old ai d
in active bearing, and the others soon
will be. There are nearly 1,400 in
all.
In twelve years more Judgo La
mar’s grove should output a quarter
of a million pounds a year, with Fav
orable seasons. This estimate seems
large, but that will be less than 200
pounds to the tree, while individual
trees here have borne as much as six
hundred pounds of nuts at 22 years
old. He gets 50 cents a pound for
varieties and sixty-five and seventy
cents a pound for other varieties.
Northern and Western shipment.
His grove has seven hundred of
the famous “Schley” trees that
bring the highest prices of all.
His pecan nursery contains fifty to
sixty thousand young trees and many
thousand budded in 1918 and twenty
five thousand to be budded this sum
mer. Judge Lamar could not fill his
orders this season.
The bearing trees seem to be
each equal to the other in size, each
tree a model tree. The entire grove
and all the nursery stock have been
fertilized and plowed out already.
The trees promise a large crop for
1919 and already are showing a heavy

Why You Need One
You, like many other retailers may be satisfied that your business is paying you a profit;
yet you do not know how much money you are losing every day through pencil and paper
methods of figuring. Neither are you getting any of the business building figure facta

will put organization and accuracy into your business —be it large or small —and will stop
■ the unseen, profit-robbing leaks that are keeping many a retail business close to the edge.
♦
You don’t want to lose money by errors
especially in the addition of sales slips, where most mistakes occur. One figure added wrong
spells a certain loss for you —and such errors usually get by without detection.
You don’t want to offend customers by overcharges
If you overcharge a customer even once through a perfectly understandable error in the addition of •

that mistakes will happen” she becomes interested in other stores that she’d never thought of before.
You want to know your Daily Profits
No man likes to do business blindfolded —yet many retailers do, simply because they iiate to wade
tnrough a maze of figures to get to the light.
A Burroughs will give you the amounts of your daily profits, sales, and expenses. It will tell you
every day just how your business stands—and it gets this information quickly and accurately.
You want to keep tab on your clerks
This information is absolutely necessary. You should know how much each clerk and each depart
ment sells every day. You should be able to tell which clerk is an asset, which department »
. paying and where you are making money, A Burroughs Machine will get this information for vou
speedily and accurately. r
You want as simple bookkeeping as possible
Keeping books with a Burroughs is not only the simplest but the least expensive method It is
