verdict when Lewis Murray, negro,
sentenced to death to the case, repud
iated his confession which implicated
Cook.

with Blake's death.
W T. Morris,/father of General
Morris. ;!v ; oung mar. who died in
the Atlanta city jail from the effects
of poisoned liquor Jan. 21, has tiled
suit against the city of Atlanta for
$25,000 damages. He charges that
his son failed to get. proper treatment
at the hands of the Atlanta authori-

S. S. Fryer, of near Rochelle, was
shot and instantly killed in a pistol
duel with John A. McCall in the
Bank of Rochelle Friday. McCall
was wounded. The duel was the re
sult of a dispute over the division of
some insurance money.
Fire Friday destroyed the general
store of Robinson &, Co. and the W.
J. Cribb hardware store at Moultrie,
with a loss of $25,000.
Smallpox of mild nature is epi
demic among the colored people along
the Chattahoochee river in Stewart
county. Very few whites have the
disease.
Several saw mills near Richland
commenced operation Monday and a
number of people out of work there
for several months, have secured jobs.
W. D. Lloyd, of Richland, who is
one of the bank examiners of Geor
gia, is closing the affairs of the Lewis
Banking Company at Montezuma.
The Bank of Richland and the Peo
ples’ Bank there have consolidated
and will be known as the Peeples’
