PLAY PLEASES
“Turn to The Right”
Well Received By
Full House
Americus again demonstrated its
approval o fclean plays when a pack
ed house saw “Turn to the Right” at
the Rylander theater Wednesday
night. The play, produced by the same
men who were responsible for “Light
nin’,” the charming offerin which
opened the theater January 21, was
thoroughly delightful, and apparent
ly pleased every persoh in the audi
ence immensely. Lacking the equisite
acting of Milton Nobles, and the fin
ish of Bessie Bacon, Barney Gilmore,
Percy Winter and others in “Light
nin’,’’ and therefore falling short of
that most unusual offering in artist
ry and extraordinary appeal, it nev
ertheless was capably handled by a
well-balanced cast—a cast that fit
the character of the story satisfac
torily.
The opening of the play was mar
red somewhat by a nimproptu Sketch
imported from the powerhouse en
titled, “The Light That Failed.” Just
as the prologue of the play had been]
well started the electric lights waver-]
ed, flickered, then died. The scene J
was laid in a pawnshop in Ossining, (
New York, the city beside the Sing
Sing prison, at an hour just before
dawn when a young released convict
called to buy some second hand
clothing to wear home. The stage
manager was quick to make the best
of the situation, and promptly se
cured two oil lanters, in the light
light of which the prologue continu
ed, with a more realistic lighting ef
fect than was afforded by the full
stage light. Before the prologue was
completed the trouble at the power
house was remedied and no further
Interruption occurred.
The play had to do with a country
boy driven from home by a rascal
ly, rich old deacon, the villiage skin
flint, with whose daughter the boy
was in love. The boy innocently gets
into trouble, and goes to prison for
a year. Two prison pals dog his steps
when he gets out. The scenes are -
mostly laid at his home, where his
white haired old mother, believing
always in the good in folks, in her
Bible and in her God, finally helps,
without her own knowledge, the two
pals to go straight and the boy to i
come back. It is a trictly rural play,
recalling strongly in some respects

“The Fortune Hunter,” put out sev
eral years ago by the same producers
and containing at least two members
of the cast seen here Wednesday
night, “Way Down East,” “The Old
Homestead, “The Country Boy” and
other productions of the last two de
cades. It is entirely wholesome, as
well as delightful, with a pleasing
moral.
It would be difficult to distinguish
between the numerous members of
the cast. Jane Ellison, as Mrs. Bas
com, the mother, was a most pleas
ing character, and the heart of the
play. Joseph Bernard, as Muggs, one
of the crook pals, and John O’Con
nor, as Gilly, the other, furnished
much of the comedy, and did it in a
skillful manner. Every other member
of the cast was pleasing.
