Notable Victory At
Conference
WASHINGTON, Veb. 18.—Chair
man George White of the Democratic
National committee and his support
ers came forth victorious last night
from a meeting of the national com

teen, the first official conference of
the party’s leaders since the Novem

The executive committee, appoint

White to discuss reorganization of
party machinery, by unanimous vote
turned down as impracticable the
proposal of Thomas B. Love, of Tex
as and fitfy-six other members of
the National Committee, that the full
membership of the National Com
mittee be called to meet March 1 at
St. Louis or some other central city.
The executive committee also
adopted a program for reorganization
of the party, which Mr. White was
understood to have put before the
meeting. This program, as adopted,
provides for the appointment by the
chairman of a sub-committee of five
to devise means of liquidating the
$160,000 indebtedness incurred in
the last campaign and to prepare a
budget of expenses for maintaining
headquarters in Washington and for
preparation by the chairman of a
plan for the organization of a wom
an’s bureau of the National Commit
tee.
The victory of Chairman White
and his forces was augmented
through absence from the committee j
discussions of any suggestion that

matter was the announcement of

The Fairy Queen clapped her h ands a n d four white gulls flew
w»rd them.
«MOW,” said the Fairy Queen to
the twins as they were floating
around on a large cake of ice in the
middle of the sea, (all that was left
of the enchanted iceberg castle,) “if
you wish to continue your journey to
the South Pole, I shall see that your
Magic Green Shoes and your box of
Charms are returned to you. Other
wise you should never be able to
Teach the cave of Snitcher-Snatch,
the wicked fairy who stole the toys.”
“But the wizard took them away
from us,” protested Nick. “They
must be at the bottom of the sea
by this time!”
The Fairy Queen smiles and clap
ped her hands. Instantly there was
a sound of wings and four white gulls
flew toward them. As they lighted
upon the ice, each bird dropped a
little Green Shoe.
“Oh!” cried the children in delight,
seizing the shoes and putting them on
quickly. “Thank you, kind birds. We
thought that—” but another sound
interrupted them, the sound of a
great blowing and splashing in the
water, and great dark form came so |
close that it threatened to overturn
them. The twins clutched each oth
er in alarm. But again came the
Fairy Queen’s voice. ‘Don’t get
frightened. It is only another of my
faithful messengers.”
Just then the whale, for that is
what it was, opened his jaws wide,
and had it not been for the Fairy
Queen’s words I’m sure that Nancy
and Nick would have thought that
that was tfhe end of them. Instead,
however, the whale laid something
on the edge of the ice at their feet.
“It’s our box,” said Nancy. “Our
Box of Charms.”
“You needn’t have been frighten
ed,” smiles the whale, (yes, he smil
ed) “for I couldn’t swallow so much

Once again the twins were ready
to continue their journey to the South
Pole. They were on a little ice-is
land floating about in the ocean, but
the Fairy Queen was beside them and
besides they had found their Magic
Green Shoes, so they were in no dan
ger.
Nick looked at his map. ‘‘We had
better be starting, Nancy,” he re
minded her. “We lost so much time
while we were prisoners of the wick

make up for it.”
“I think,” said the Fairy Queen,

She waved her wand, and instant
ly a large pelican was beside them,
looking fat and sleek and sleepy.
“Put these children safely away in
your bill,” she commanded, “and
carry them to shore safely. And mind
you, don’t you get hungry and for

The pelican promised and turned

vanished at once. Far away, the bird
with the little boy and girl in his
beak, was a mere speck in the sky.
Once again the twins were on their
travels.
