MONEYLENDERS’
LICENSE IS CUT
All Announcing Loan
Business Subject Bv
Council s Order
For some weeks a dispute has
been raging under cover in Americas
on the subject of money lenders as
to who were embraced in that classi
fication and therefore subject to col
lection of the city special license tax
of SSO per year. Several lawyers
were brought before Recorder Fort
and tried for non-payment of license
and the dispute was threshed out
more or less unsatisfactorily for all.
It was contended by some attorneys
that they were not money lenders,
although they advertised money to
lend, they asserting that they were
merely attorneys acting for specific
clients in obtaining loans, being paid
no commissions whatever by the loan
companies. Others admitted they
were lenders as representative of in
vestors and paid their licenses. Still
others had paid at the beginning of
the year, never questioning tfteir li
ability to pay.
Thursday night at its regular meet
ing the city council settled the con
troversy by amending the license or
dinance to provide for a yearly li
cense fee of $35 instead of SSO, and
instructing City Marshal Pouncey to
collect the tax from all persons an
nouncing themselves as lending mon

The report of the ordinance com
mittee making, the reduction was
presented by Chairman W. E. Taylor.
“I want to explain this reduction,” >
said Mr. Taylor. “The committee de-|
cided to make this cut on account;
of conditions existing at present, so
as to encourage outside money -to
come in,”
Marshal Pouncey was busy today!
getting in touch with the numerous
lawyers who handle loans as a side
line, and others who represent lend
ers of money here.

COLtJMBIA, Mo., apepals to the
world to help it solve the great
twins mystery.
Why has Columbia more twins in
proportion to its population than any
city in America?
The census reveals that Columbia,
with a total resident and student
population of 15,272, has 32 pairs
of twins.
That’s one pair of twins to every
477 persons living in the Missouri
college town.
“Am I seeing double?” asks the
stranger in Columbia after meeting
pair after pair of twins.
And Columbia asks the visitor a
dozen questions in reply:
“Why is Columbia the record
twin town?
“Why are some of the twins iden
tical?
“Why are some of the twins dif
ferent?
“Why do some of the twins even
think alike?
“Why do some of them think to
tally unlike?”
And then come another pair along.
“Say, can you tell which is which?”
