The Citizens Bank of Butler has
been organized at Butler to take the
place of the Butler Banking compa
ny, which suspended operations a
few weeks ago.
James Thornton, young white man
arrested in Brunswick Monday in
connection with the death of Hor
ace Woodward, was exonerated at a
preliminary hearing Wednesday.
Ben Childres, living near Tal
botton, was attacked by a bull Wed
nesday and several ribs broken.
The coroner’s jury holding an in
quest over John Lee Eberhardt, the
negro who was burned at the stake
by a mob of 7,000 at Athens Wednes
day night, announced that the wrong
man was not lynched. The decision
reached was that Mrs. Lee met her
death from gunshot wounds inflict
ed by a weapon in the hands of Eber
hardt.
Mace Giddens. the former Sumter
county negro who killed Deputy
Sheriff W. P. Giddens at Sylvester
several weeks ago, went on trial in
the Worth county Superior court
Thursday, having been indicted by
the grand jury.
Several prominent citizens of Co
lumbus. headed by W. W. McKenzie,
have purchased a camp site and have
given it to the Boy Scouts as a per
manent camp. So far as is known this
is the first permanent Boy Scout
camp ever given to the Scout organi
sation in America. It will be named
Camp McKenzie in honor of Mr. Mc-
Kenzie.
Major General Wood and his aide,
Col. Gordon Johnson, who arrived in
Columbus Wednesday night on an in
spection tour of Camp Benning, view
ed a wonderful sham battle staged
for his benefit Thursday.
An emphatic denial was made by
Major General Wood at Columbus
Thursday of reports that he was on
his way to St. Augustine, Fla., to con
fer with President-elect Harding. He
will leave Friday for Chicago, he
stated.
The Waycross city council has
voted to employ a public nurse a:
not less than SSO per month, SSO to
be paid by the city and the remain
der by other sources.
The watermelon growers of Dooly
county have been called to meet at
the court house at Vienna Saturday
at 3 o’clock.
A Buick car driven by Miss Dun
woody Forehand, of Vienna, killed
Charley Ziegler, a 4-year-old negro,
in that city a few days ago, the child
running in front of the car.
Eph Dudlin, 25-year-cld negro, of
La Grange, shot himself in the head
and may die. after wounding his wife
in the arm. His wife left him a week
ago. ,

went on record in favor of better
health and less malaria and voted to
co-operate with the State Board of
Health and the U. S. Public Health
Service for a most .thorough work
against malaria and its cause.
A case of sleeping sickness has
been found in Laurens county, in
which Jim Brown, a negro, slept four
days before physicians could awake
him. After awakening him it was
found that he was partially paralyzed
and had not recovered completely.
Mrs. Leona H. Powell, for several
months county demonstration agent
for Chatham county, has resigned and
returned to her work in Jefferson
county.
The doctors of Lamar county or
ganized the Lamar County Medical
association Wednesday with Dr. J. F.
M. Barren, president.

sioners of Thomas county in decid
ing to make no appropriation for
