HOWELL HEADS
DISTRICT B Y P U
Splendid Convention Os
I‘ riendship Unions
Held At Plains
More than 200 delegates attended
e . B ’ Y " P ’ conv ention held at
Plains Tuesday when more than 31
churches of the Friendship Baptist
association were represented.
Rev. Henry T. Brookshire, pastor
of Central Baptist church here, led
the devotional exercises.
Following the opening exercises
Gordon Howell, of Americus, was
elected president of the B. Y. P. U.
work in the association, with Janies
<ott, also of Americus, as perma
nent secretary and treasurer:
Miss Ethel Guerry sang during a
live minutes intermission following
the organization period, her solo be
ing “The City Four Square.”
Rev. S. F. Lowe, a splendid speak
er, pastor of the Dawson Baptist
chuch, gave a talk on “Consecration”
which was one of the features of the
meeting. In his remarks Mr. Lowe
made it very clear that without con
secration of body and mind to the
work in hand very little could be ac-l
complished in any line of religious I
work, and that this was essentially
true of Baptist Young People’s’
Unions, where all that is best is call
ed for in the youth who comprise the
membership of the organization.
H. L. Batts, field worker, spoke
on the “Associations! Work of B. Y.
P. Unons, and stressed the co-opera
tive measures which make for success
in the w-ork among young people.
A beautiful anthem was rendered
at this point by the choir of Plains
church, of which Miss Agnes Thomas
is a member.
Dr. Carl W. Minor, moderator for
the Friendship Baptist association,
devoted .>0 minutes to a talk on serv-j
ice. His remarks were especially i
adapted- to the young people present,l
in that he urged them to give of their!
time and talents while they were;
young and could be of valuable as
sistance in whatever religious work
was undertaken. He complimented
the association upon having such a
large number of willing workers in
the organizations which make up the
whole.
Adjournment came for dinner i
which had been prepared by the la-1
dies of Plains for the pleasure of the
guests in their midst.
The first period of the afternoon

Splendid Reports.
Reports from all unions in the
Friendship association were then :
read ,all them showing remarkable:
I progress in the last year, both in an!
; increased membership and the mag- ■
! nitude of work accomplished. At this
; period Mr. Batts spoke on local B. Y.
P. U. work, and his remarks closed
with a congratulatory message to
the various unions represented on the ;
magnificent showing contained in the
read reports.
An agreement was reached to have
j another meeting of the B. Y. P. U.
jin September, the exact time and
; place of meeting to a later decision.
Miss Louise Herndon, director of
the Junior B. Y. P. U. of the Cen
tral Baptist church in Americus, gave
i a demonstration p’rogram, pleasing
i the large audience.
i This demonstration was followed
! by a playlet given by the Senior B.
IY. P. U. of the Central Baptist
I church, entitled. “The Trial of the
! Robbers.” In this play a number of
! delinquents were brought to trial foi
I not giving their tenth, the court pro
i ceedings which tried and convicted
the guilty ones furnishing very
realistic scenes. The play was an ou‘
standing, feature of a day of splen
did demonstrations, and was enthus-
I iastically received.
Every section ot Friendship Bap
I tist association was represented,
! delegates coming from Oglethorpe,
Dawson and more remote points to at
; tend.
■ I The first Baptist B. Y. P. U. was
represented by 25 of its members
■ and made a splendid showing in the
• reports which were heard.
