INITIAL MEETING
i OF W. C. T. U.
An earnest and enthusiastic band
of women gathered in the auditorium
of the First Methodist church Tues
day afternoon to attend the initial
meeting of the Woman’s Temperance
Union after the organization under
the direction of Mrs. Mary Harris
Armor, who visited Americus in the
interest of this national work.
At the organization meeting sev
enteen women pledged themselves to
support the work of this movement
in Americus, and ten more joined the
ranks at the gathering on Tuesday.
Mrs. T. H. McGillis was elected
president and presided on Tuesday
with a grace and dignity characteris
tic of her. She made a short but
earnest talk before the business ses
sion, during which she asked the sup
port and co-operation of every wom
an present to assist, her in the office
of president of one of the most po
tential organizations extant. At the
close of her remarks, a motion was;
made that the union as a body rise
and pledge unqualified support to the
president and her work.

ber of a number of church organiza-j
tions in Americus,, made a splendid
talk on the importance of the temp I
crance work in Americus. “Not on
ly along intoxicating beverages may
we be temperate,” she said, “but
temperance in all things is a cardinal
virtue. There is a temperance to
be extracted in dress, in manners, in
speech, in consumption of foods, all
of which is covered by the workings
of the Womans Temperance Union.”
“It affects me almost to tears,”
Mrs. Lott continued, “to see so many
earnest women co-operating in this
work which is in its initial stage only
in this city. There is a great work
to be done in this line, and there are
many workers among the various or
ganizations of the church who will
undertake it with avidity. It is a
woman’s work essentially, because it
is in line with her every day teach
ings in the home circle around the
fireside and among her children.
“There are many splendid precepts
to be had front the lessions which
the Union promulgaes, she conclud
ed, “and it is the duty of each wom
an present to study caiefully these
precepts sent our from national head
quarters and make this Union the
banner organization of all the Unions
affiliated in the national organiza
tion.”
At the conclusion of Mrs. Lott’s
talk, a quiz followed which gave the
women a clearer insight into the
workings of the Union.
During the business session it was
decided to indicate the first Tuesday
after the third Sunday in each month
as the official time for meeting, the
hour to be 3 o’clock. Hereafter the
meetings will be held from the va
rious churches of Americus, this be
ing stated that a greater feeling of
undenominationalism will result.
The ten new members who enroll
ed themselves were Mrs. Z. A. Little
john, Mrs. G. R. Ellis, Mrs. C. C.

READY TO PAVE
Good Progress Made On
Rural Project West
Os City
Grading work on Tanyard Hill,
just west of Americus, for the lay
ing of paving on the second rural
paving project, has been completed,
County Engineer John B. Ansley an
nounced today, and the work of cut
ting down and grading Muckalee Hill,
immediately joining the city on the
west, has progressed to the point that
only about a week of actual grading
remains to be done to complete it. .
When Muckalee Hill is finished the
road forces will be put to hauling
crushed rock to a point one and a
half miles out from Americus, where
the paving work will be started and
carried on toward Americus. When
completed, this paving will give the
road forces a good stretch of hard
suiface road to use in hauling mate
rials for extending the paving the
full six miles provided for in the pro
ject.
The fills at the foot of both Tan
yard and Muckalee hills are well set
tled because of the continued traf
fic over the work while in progress
and the use of the county’s 16-ton
roller at frequent intervals over the
freshly moved earth, and it is re
garded as ready for permanent sur
facing as soon as the material can be
had.
