F BY MAX BALTHASAR
Noted Fight Expert
• ATLATINC CITY. N. J., June 7.
If .Jack Dempiiev def?ats Georg.«
Carpentier at Jersey City on
July 2, it will b'e his last rppea”ance
in the ring, unless it is made worth
his while to meet Jess Willard on
Labor Day.
It he is defeated by Carpentier he
will seek a return match and, win or
lose in the event that Carpentire
consents to meet him a second time,
he will quit the gloves forever.
The plans of the champion were
confided to an intimate of years from
the west and he appeared to be speak
ing in all sincerity.
“If I beat Carpentier,” he asked,
who will there be left for me to
fight. Yes, there is a possibility of
meeting Willard on Labor Day, ‘ bnt
that is uncertain.
“Therefore, barring a chance to
meet Willard, there will be no ring
work for me. and I can’t loaf, so I
might as well retire with my title
and seek employment in other lines.
. "It is true that I will have suffi
cient money to keep me comfortably,
but I must work. I cannot lead an
idle life.
"The motion pictures present many
opportunities and there will be no
difficulty in securing theatrical en
gagements.”
Dempsey will celebrate his twenty
sixth birthday on the 24th dos this
month, and a heavyweight at that
age is barely at his peak. If Demp
sey retires, therefore, he will be
passing ud fully six good fighting
years.
That Dempsey hopes to make a big
cleanup in the forthcoming fight in
anticipation of his retirement is re
vealed in a remark he made in the
course of a fanning bee.
“I like Carpentier and I think he
is a fine fellow,” the champion said,
"but I wish he would get out more,
where the public could see him.
‘‘He may have his very good rea
sons for permitting only the newspa
per men to see him, and then only
for an hour three times a week, but
it would help matters greatly if he
would let down the bars. You know
we are fighting on a percentage.”
Dempsey, despite the task before
him, is always of good cheer. He
fairly bubbles over when a friend of
IP the early days comes to visit him.
LEONARD DEFENDS TITLE
HARRISON, N. J., June 7.—Ben
ny Leonard defended his title of
lightweight champion of the world in
a twelve round bout here last night
at the Newark baseball club’s park,
his oppenent being Rocky Kansas of
Buffalo.
Under the New Jersey law, no de
cision by the referee is allowed, but |
in the opinion of the majority of the
experts around the ringside Leonard I
clearly outpointed his opponent.

n Featherweight Champ Johnny K
ter shane than when he fought Jess
Willard at Toledo.
He’ s Rough and Ready
Dempsey, under the surface, is the
same boyish, plain, rouf'ih and ready
fighter that he always has been, He
doesn’t like to bother much about the
technical side of fighting. What he
wants to do is “‘just fight.” His own
idea of a championship fight would
be to have the promoters put one
challenger after the other into the
ring with him and let him see how
many of ’em he could topple over in
a day.
The effect of the coat of scientific
veneer that has been applied to the
champ by his manager, Jack Kearns,
is noticeable however. For Dempsey
is boxing far more cleverly than he
did at Toledo against Willard and at
Benton Harbor against Miske.
Often Breaks Away
But not even Kearns can keep the
champ, when he finds himself getting
into a hole, from throwing science
overboard and climbing out with just
plain, unvarnished Dempsey fighting.

Has Spendei Up.
But the important fa t I learned
in donning the mi‘t,s with him is that
he is speeding up hit -punches and

when he won the title. He -’.tikes

This speed is going to be a won
