MAJ. CHURCHILL
BACK AT FIELD
Former Commander Returns, Re
stored 1 Hoealth—No News
Os Closing Os Post
Major and Mrs. Lawrence S. Chur
chill, who left Souther Field several
months ago for Washington, where
the major entered Walter Reed gen
eral army hospital for treatment,
have returned to the air post here
and will be stationed here indefinite
ly. Major Churchill, who left Ameri
cus suffering from a stomach ailment
resulting from flying service on the
front in France, returned in seem
ing perfect health. After remaining
a time at the army hospital, he went
to his old home at Oswego, N. Y.,
where he spent three months resting
and enjoying himself, building back
his health and restoring himself com
pletely. On their return to Americus
Major and Mrs. Churchill stopped |
several days at Rome, Ga., Mrs. Chur- ■
chill’s home before their marriage
a year and a half ago.
Upon the return of Major N thcr
wood, post commander, who has been
on vacation leave, Major Churchill,
who was former commanding officer)
will be second in eomand, Majjr
Netherwood ranking as his senior.
This will give the post two officers
of the rank of major, which it has
not had for many months.
Major Churchill stated that there
was no official news regarding the
i eported plans to abandon Souther
Field. He said he was told in Wash
ington that it was planned to com
bine Souther Field and the post at i
Montgomery, but that no actual steps '
in this direction had yet 'been taken, I
so far as he knew.

Scene From' The Bat.”
Wagenhals & Kemper’s production (
of “The Rat,” by Mary Roberts Rine
hart and Avery Hopwood will be pre
sented here tomorrow night by a
brilliant cast.
This is the play, conceded by all
to be the greatest success in years.
This is the play about which there
has been more discussion than any
other play produced in a generation
or more. j
“The Bat” comes here with a re
markable record for popularity. It
has played for more than a year at
the Morosco theater, New York, (and ,
is still there.) Simultaneously, an-)
other company broke every existing .
theatrical record in Chicago by play- I
ing at the Princess theater, that city, '
for one~solid year. Those are facts
to conjure with.
Self praise, however, as the saying ,
tuns, goes but a little ways. For
that reason the management defers
its own judgment of “The Bat” to
that of the critics of New York and
Chicago who were unanimous in their (
enthusiasm over the play. Brief j
excerpts from some of the criticisms
follow;
, “The best mastery play New York I
has ever seen”—Telegram.
“A wild mystery melodraqja, con- ■
.‘'durably wilder than any seen in
these parts for a long time thor-
oughly interesting and immensely
amusing”—The Times.
