SHIP-TO-SHORE PHONE BRINGS LAND-SEA
RADIO NEARER ‘
BY A. H. GRISWOLD
American Telephone and Telegraph
Company
NEW YORK, April 3.—You may
be able soon to pick up your tele
phone at home and talk to a friend at
sea.
It is but a question of time until a
demand for such ship-to-shore tele
phony will make the offering of this
new telephone service practicable.
In anticipation of this demand the
Bell system and the Radio Corpora
tion of America are carrying out all
necessary preliminary developments.
The number of problems, both
technical and commercial, which the
service involves is great and not all
them have been solved. A most en
couraging start, however, has been
recorded.
At a recent demonstration in New
ork City a successful radio-wire
connection between the steamship
America, 370 miles out at sea, and a
point 100 miles inland was shown in
operation. The clearness and loud
ness of the voice coming over the
circuit were, at practically all times,
comparable with those supplied en
tirely by wire connections.
The offerings of ship-to-shore ser
vice will involve the building of
coastal radio telephone stations at
suitable points for communication
with ships at sea. It will also in
volve the extension of the present
nation-wide telephone lines relaying
messages from the wires to the ether
and vice versa, v
This composite system will enable
a passenger on shipboard , even
though several hundred miles from
shore, to talk with anyone through
out the entire Bell telephone system.
Ihe time has not yet come, and
indeed may never come, when the
same certainty and satisfactoriness
of telephone service can be rendered
over waters as we now obtain by
NOTES FROM THE
AGGIE SCHOOL
Everybody is invited to Aggie next
Tuesday, April 4, Ty Cobb day, and
also the day when the Aggie will
have some splendid things to ex
hibit.
The Home Economics department
will have a sewing exhibit on Tues
day, when the girls will wear hats,
and dresses which they have made
with their own hands. Linens will
also be exhibited. A special invita
tion is extended to the visitors in
Americas Ty Cobb day to visit this
department of the school, to learn
what the girls in the home economics
department can do.
They not only'can sew excellently
with the needle, but are also skilled
m the operation of a cream separa
tor, and have been taught to make
splendid butter. Chicken raising is
also a part of their course and this
spring, when there was a . uperabund
ance of eggs, they learned how to
preserve this product for times of
scarcity.
One dish is planned and cooked by
the girls in the domestic science de
partment, which is served in the din
ing hall each day, thus giving them
lessons in practical cookery and the
manner of serving, 'the planning,
cooking and serving of a palatable j
meal is also included in the course. ;
take making is also an accomplish-!
ment which the girls are required to !
master.
The Junior and Senior classes are >
enthusiastic over their course in home j
planning and interior decoration -
course which has recently been added
to the regular outline. This enables 1
them to purchase economically for !
the home, blend the proper and har
monizing colors and make the place
°f abode a real home.
Home nursing is also taught, to- :
gether with first aid lessons. This i
work has been approved by the ;
American Red Cross inspector from
Washington, D. C., which department I
