CANNING CLUBSi
WHAT’S DOING IN
Miss Parkman, Economics Agent,
Back From Columbus
Meeting
Miss Bonnie Parkman, county home
economics agent, returned this week
from the convention of home econom
ics agents in Columbus Thursday,
Friday and Saturday of last week.
Miss Parkman reports great inspira-
from the lectures and addresses
QB>iven by national speakers, as well as
by state workers in the various
club organizations.
“Women who had never before ut
tered a syllable in public,’’ said Miss
Parkman, “rose and spoke j fluently
and earnestly of the work being done
in the county and rural school dis
tricts, enlarging upon the great edu
cational advantages brought to these
sections equal to the higher institu
tions of learning in the larger cities.
It was a great help to me in my work
throughout Sumter county and ideas
were gained which I hope to pass
on.”
Miss Parkman visited the Shiloh
school Wednesday of this week, meet-,
ing with the girls’ clubs in the school
building. Plans were discussed for
the use of containers for the can
ning of products later in the sum
mer, and interest re-awakened by a
resume of the work done at the Col
umbus convention.
Thursday afternoon she visited
the school at New Era, where the
girls of the canning clubs met with
the women of the community in dis
cussing plans for the county fair to
be held here in the fall, and for the
display of canning products put up
by them during the summer. It was
proposed to exhibit the products to
the public in a show window of an
Americus store. This is to be done
for the purpose of bringing the rural
producers in closer relationship with
the city consumers.
Miss Parkman also began classes
in millinery at the Shiloh and New
Era schools, this work to be employ
nent for the students during the pe
riod before active club work begins.
Enthusiasm is growing daily
in poultry and canning club work in
these schools, and splendid results are
expected to accrue.
“Made-in-Georgia Week” will be
observed here with an appropriate
Georgia products dinner under the
auspices of the women’s clubs, and
the county clubs have been invited to
participate by contributing home
canned products.
11. N. Harvey, state landscape gard
ener, will visit Sumter county May 1,
•'I and 3 in the interest of higher edu
cation for high school graduates.
Monday, May 1, he will visit the
school at Leslie, where he will ad
dress the senior class on the value
of college education, and to speak to
the school in general on the effect
of beautiful landscape surroundings.
Pk ins school will also be visited dur
ing the week, where he will assist in

WOMEN MUST
PAY POLL TAX
Attorney General Says Tax Is
Now Due, Whether Women
Register Or Not
ATLANTA, May 2, —Some of the
weekly newspapers of the state, ac
cording to information received in
Atlanta, are about to get the women
voters in bad. From a number of
centers in the s.ate comes the state-
I ment that the impression prevails
j that women are not required to pay
| the poll tax when registering, in or
> der to vote this year. An opinion
j from the attorney general has been
. iequested on the subject heretofore,
I and based on an err oneous impression
; he has been quoted as saying no poll
j tax is required. To set that point
I straight, Attorney General Geo. M.
' Napier, has issued the following
j statement:
“The attorney general has been in
i'. formed that one or more county
lieves in putting every car in such
condition as to be sure that it will
give the buyer satisfactory service.
Mr. Turpin states that they have
had their mechanical department
busy for the pas three weeks getting
these cars in such ’condition as de
manded by Mr. Johnson and this has
been done and they are now ready
for him to start tlw sale, feeling sure
that it will be a great success.

newspapers has quoted the attorney
general as having stated that women
are not due to pay poll tax this year.
This is entirely erroneous, and must
be due to a typographical error. The
act itself expressly fixes January 1,
1922, as the time the law becomes ef
fective. Women are now exactly on
the same footing as men are with re
lation to paying poll tax, and the tax
is effective upon women between the
ages of twenty-one and sixty years,
for this year, whether they qualify
to vote or note”
In other words, even if a woman
does not register to vote this year, she
is due 1922 poll tax, and will have
to pay it whenever she does attempt
to register. \
TIFTON TO HAVE GOLF AND
30-ACRE FISHING LAKE
TIFTON, May 2.—Tifton is to
have a country club, including a lake
covering thirty acres and a nine-frolf
golf course. The location is what is
known as the Hall mill pond, the site
of a water mill about 60 years old,
about 3 miles south of Tifton be
tween the National Highway and the
Tiftort and Moultrie road. A corpor
ation has been formed of 100 mem
bers and the stock subscribed. A tract
of 100 acres has been purchased and
as soon as articles of incorporation
can be had, work will begin on repair
ing the dam, building a club house
and laying out the golf course. The
land was bought from James Mcln
nis, Col. C. W. Fulwood negotiating
the deal. Tifton needs something of
the kind. Two club houses are owned
by Tifton citizens, but they are 9
miles out on Alapaha river, and need
was felt for a modern playgroup
nearer the city. The lake will ffe
stocked with fish, so that it will be a
fishing preserve, as well as a play
ground.
