Wisconsin Democrats For
High Office
OSHKOSH, Wis., July 12 —Mrs.
Ben C. Hooper, of Oshkosh, Wis., is
the first woman in Wisconsin to re
ceive the indorsement o fa political
party for nominee as United States
senator. At the recent state Demo
cratic conference she was unanimous
ly chosen to represent the party at
the September primaries. This
means that she will oppose either U.
S. Senator Robjert M. LaFollette or
Dr. W. A. Ganfield, nominees of two
different factions of the Republi
can party at the general election.
For the last fifteen years, Mrs.
Hoof er has been an ardent worker
for woman suffrage. When women
were given the right to vote, she was
instrumental in organizing the Wis
consin League of Women Voters of
which she has been president since
its organization in 1919. She was a
member of the national commit ee
on armament reduction of the Wis
consin League of Women Voters and
also a member of the National Amer
ican Women’s Suffrage board.
Mrs. Hooper was born in Winne
sheak County, lowa, in 1865, and be
cause of delicate health, never had
an opportunity to attend public
schools, receiving her education
through training of a governess. She

Marriage, according to Mrs. Hoop- ,
er, does not destroy woman's ideni- .
ty, and she is quoted as saying: j
“The time is coming when woman, in J
her tenacious ability to get what she .
[is after, will find away of marrying
and having a home and family with
out giving up her identity and inde- [
pendence.”
Mrs. Hooper spends a great deal of
her time in assisting her husband in
a general merchandise establishment,
and always finds time to take a fond
interest in the care of her home.
There is no greater admirer of
former President Wilson than Mrs.
Hooper, who .believes that the ideals
he brought before the people of
America while president, will live
forever in the history of the United
States.
During the World War Mrs. Hoop
er was active in Wisconsin, spend
ing a great deal of her time as head
of the Liberty Loan drive in Osh
kosh and working with the Council
of Defense. She is an ardent believ
er in world peace and believes that
her life’s work will have been ac
complished if she can help Tiring
about an understanding among the
nations of the world.
Mrs. Hooper always has urged wo
men to take an active part in poli
tics, saying it was the home that was
affected first of all by such meas
ures as taxation, and is quoted as
saying: “Advancing taxes affect the
home first of all, because it is the
only place where the business man
dares economize.”
This is the first time that Mrs.

WAYCROSS, July 12.—The bill
providing for a commission-manager
form of government for Waycross
will be introduced in the Georgia
legislature within the next ten days
in the opinion of Representative J.
D. Blalock, one of Ware county’s
representatives in the legislature. He
is at the present time investigating
the workings of this form of gov
ernment in other Georgia cities prior
to making the exact draft of the bill.
Mr. Blalock is of the opinion that
the state highway department will be
readjusted in order to bring about a
separation between the business and
engineering branches of the depart
ment. In reference to the passage of
bonds by Georgia f orgood roads, Mr.
Blalock is decidedly of the opinion
that such a bill will be defeated.
