10 MOLE TRAFFIC
Even If Program to Increase Facil
ities Is Carried, Co-operation
of Shippers Is Required
ATLANTA, May 14.—For several
weeks, as pointed out by business
men here today, there has been an
unusual amount of news dealing with
the business outlook for the remain
ing months <f 1923.
To meet the traffic needs of the
promised expression, it is pointed out
the railroads will be severely bested.
A program of preparation was ap
proved recently .by the executive
co.iiirntee of the Association of Rail
way Executives calling for, Atlartf
JMfc»say, “the largest bud
facilities, power and
equipment for many years, if not
in the history of the roads.’’
Even if this program is fully car
ried out co-operation will be required
by shippers so that transportation
equipment will be used with as little
waste as possible.
For several years efforts have
been made to develop such co-oper
ation by full car shipments and by
avoidance of unnecessary delay in
loading and unloading cars. Some
national lawmakers who* have been
criticising the railroads for what they
say is lack of efficiency in opera
tion, Atlanta railroad men say.
Might look for a beam in the busi
ness eye of the country and see
what they could do toward removing
it.
Furthermore, the preparations of
the railroads to move in the coming
month the prospective “heaviest traf.
fie”. in the country’s history, ought,
it is stated, direct attention to the
fact that business prosperity can not
be attained without efficient trans
portation service.
Once this fact is generally realized
the constructionists with respect to
the Government’s uolicy towards the
roads will be able to prevent, it is
stated here, the Brookhart’s from im
posing handicapping legislation upon
the carriers.
