So t’fis is SJiclby! Doesn’t look any different than any other little town in the Northern Montana
oil belt. But it is! Its celebrating the Fourth of July with a world's, championship pugilistic exhibition
in which Jack Dempsey’ and Tom Gibbons will play the leading roles. Here’s Main street.
Lively Ball
Causes Row
PHILADELPHIA, May 16.—Ma
jor league batters are wondering
what kind of a ball will be in use
the coining season.
Major league pitchers are also giv
ing some thought to the same ques
tion. .
It has been rumored that the ball
would be toned down a bit this year.
The 1922 brand was the livesliest
ball ever manufactured. The ma
terials used in making it were the
best and always uniform, so that a
superior ball was always in use.
As a rule the batters have the
edge in the spring. The pitchers
round into shape slower than the
batsmen. Bad weather in the early
spring seems to affect the arms of
the pitchers more than the eyes of
the batters.
The usual bad waether that
strikes the teams after leaving their
southern camps has again been ex
perienced this year. It was an ex
cellent idea to start the season a
week late in 1923. Otherwise many
a postponed game would have been
piled up during the first week of
play.

SHELBY, Mont., May 17.—Sport
dom’s eyes are turn.ed upon Shelby
today.
A few weeks ago the little county
seat of Toole county, in the center
of the Kevin Sunburst oil field of
Northern Montana, was unheralded
and unknoivn. Scarcely anything
was, heard about it outside its own
immediate sphere.
But today its fame has spread
across the continent. Shelby’s name
is emblazoned now i n bold-faced
headlines in newspapers all river the
land.
For this, Shelby can thank Loy J.
Molumby and the other promoters—
nearly all American Legion men—
of the Jack Dempsey-Tom Gibbons
titular heavyweight bout. It will
be fought here July 4.
Shelby is busy planning accommo
dations for the thousands of people
who will come to see the “fire
works.” New hotels and boarding
houses are springing up almost over
night.
Special trains, carrying hundreds
of Pullman cars, wlil be run into
town before the fight. Construction
of miles of sidetracks has coni

Toporcer made four errors.

NEW YORK, May 17.—The New
York Giants took the odd game from
Pittsburg Wednesday, 6 to 2. Jack
Scott was in great form and let the
Pirates down with four hits, which
he kept well scattered. In only one
inning, the fifth, did Pittsburg look
dangerous, when they tied the score
with two runs on a double by Grimm,
Gooch’s base on balls, Morrision’s
sacrifice, Maranville*s sacrifice fly
and Carey’s single.
