Funeral services over the remains
ui Mrs. Louisa A. Mellard were held
this afternoon at Oak Grov.e ceme
tery. the body reaching here over
the Central of Georgia at 2:15 and
carried directly to the grave for
concluding exercises and interment.
Rev. A. B. Wells, of Macon, as
• d by Rev. Luther A. Harrell,
or of the Lee Street Methodist
church here, conducted the ob
sequies, and pallbearers were A. J,
Easom, P. T. Easom, James Easom,
Lacy Martin, C. J. Williams and J.
C. Bass.
Surviving are her husband, J. A.
Mellard, of Macon; three sons, A.
J. Easom, of Americus; P. T. Easom,
of Ty Ty; W. R. Easom, of Augusta;
ohe sister, Mrs. J. A. Davison, of
Sumter county; three brothers, Ran
som A. Holloway, Willis A. Hollo
way, and Robert H. Holloway, of
Schley c'ounty.
Mrs. Mellard had been ill only
ten days, due to complications and
advanced age. She was 77 years of
age, and was born in Sumter coun
ty, where she had resided up to 13
years ago going to Macon to reside.
She was a member of the Methodist
church, and reflected beautiful
Christian traits in her daily life.
She had a wide circle of friends
and acquaintances in Ma can and
throughout this county who mourn
the passing of so estimable a wo
man.

SEVEN MEN GET ‘D. V. S.’
HONORS AT EMORY UNIV.
ATLANTA, May 18.—Seven ‘‘ail
round ’ men of the class of 1924 have
been elected ’to membership in “D.
S. V..” the traditional senior honor
society at Emory University and are
being initiated into the organization
this week, according to announce
ments here today.
The new members include: Alton
Tildon O’Steen, Douglas, Ga.; James
Northern Mitchell, Jr., Tifton; James
Harris Howell-, Zebulon; Millsaps
Fitzhugh, Memphis, Tenn.; Hunt
Clement, Decatur; Eben Fletcher
Tilley, Atlanta; Francis L. Edmond
son, West Point.
Election to D. V. S.’ is based on
distinction in student activities,
schoLirship and fellowship. It has
long been regarded as one of the
outstanding honors a member cf the
senior class can attain.
TO change hotel name
SAVANNAH, May 18.—The Col
lins hotel is to be extended eastward
to Drayton street and the, name
changed to “The John Wesley” ho
tel, according to announcements
here. When the work is completed,
it will represent an investment of
$400,000.
WILL RESIST ORDER
SAVANNAH, May 18.—Members
of the Savannah Real Estate board
are opposing the recent order of the
city council to install water meters
in small negro houses of the city.
A special committee of the real es
tate board appeared before the coun
cil to oppose the order.
M’RAE, May 18—Good progress is
being made by the Dixie Oil com
pany in their drilling in Telfair coun
ty, according to K. M. Hancock, who
is in charge of the operations in this
district. A number of perfect speci
mens of shark teeth, cronids and
fossils have been brought up during
the course of their operations, it
is stated.

The city won the first contest in
the fight being made by S. H. Kress
& Co., to escape paying $150.00
annual license today when Manager
Little paid City Clerk and Treasurer
Dudley Gatewood the sum under the
license ordinance. The payment was
made “under protest” and the case
will later be decided by the courts.
Payment was made after a case
for doing business without license
had been made against Manager Lit
tle, who explained to the recorder
that he had acted upon the advica
o fhis counsel, R. L. Maynard, in
declining to pay the license fee upon
demand of the city marshal. Upon
this explanation he was permitted to
go without payment of a fine, Re
corder ruling that he should not be
punished for acting upon an attor
ney’s advice, upon condition that the
money due the city was no longer
withheld.

ATLANTA, May 15—The court
erred in not sustaining the demurrer
to the petition of plaintiff and in
granting writ of prohibition restrain
ing the city council of Macon from
trying J. L. Anderson on the charges
recently preferred against him. ac
cording to a decision handed down
today by the Supreme Court.
Anderson is a member of the city
council and is charged with embez
zling over $2,000 from the funds of
j Central City* Lodge No. 8 of the In
ternational Associaiton of Machin
ists while he was treasurer of the
lodge.

START MOVE TO ERECT
HOUSES AT WAYCROSS
WAYCROSS, M#y 18.—A move is
being started in Waycross for the
construction of a number of houses
to meet the housing problem which
the city finds itself facing. The
matter was discussed at recent meet
ing of the Kiwanis club and a num
ber of citizens of the city are be
ginning to fall in line for the con
struction program the leaders hope
to put across. The records show
