Tourist Accommodations
The Central of Georgia is busy
■•now preparing material for the new
■winter folder to be issue by that
■ railroad at an early date, and in
■ which Americus will occupy a
■ prominent place.
| F. J. Robinson, general passenger
■ agent, who is preparing the publi-
I cation, will play up Americus as
■ one of the points of interest on the
I line, with the attention of tourists
■ especialy directed to the advantages
3 of this section as a winter resort,
I and has asked Secretary Henry I’.
I Everett of the Chamber of Com-
■ merce to co-operate with him in
I the work. Secretary Everett today
I completed an article descriptive of
I Americus which is to be used in
■ the forthcoming booklet and which
I tells of the attractions of this com-
■ munity briefly. The article .which
I will be given a circulation of more
I than a million copies, is as follows:
"Americus, having a population
I of 9010 as shown by the 1920 cen-
I sus, is located on the line of the
I Central of Georgia and Seaboard
I Air Line railways, being the county
I seat of Sumter County, Georgia.
I Here is located the modern Wind-
I sor Hotel, with a guest capacity
I of 100 room, every room having
I outside exposure, and special rates
I made for tourist parties. The rates
I per day at this hostelry are $3.50-
I $4.00 per day, and the hotel
I provided with every modern im-
■ provement, having' its own electric
I and refrigerating plants as well as
■ as a constant water supply furnish
ed by its own artesian water.
“Th e Ameircus municipal play
i ground and swimming pool embrac-
I es six acres within its bounds, and
this is available for recreation for
I every tourist, while the links of the
Americus Golf club are located a
I mile couth of the city. The use of
I the links is by invitation only, but
I members of the Golf club, number
ing every business per.; >n of phomi-
I nence in the city are genious in
I securing the use cf these by visit-
I ing golfers.
“The climate here is equal
throughout the year, with a mean
maximum during the past nine
years of 87.1 and a mean minimum
for the same period of 64.6, or a
mean average temperature over that
period of 75.8, these figures being
those of the U. S. official observer
stationed at Americus. There was a
monthly rainfall during the same
period of 4:45, the same record
I shows.
“At Americus is located the Ry
lander theater, erected a few years
ago at a cost of $150,000 which
I furnishes the best so moving pic
tures and road shows during sea
son, and near Americus there are
. m.any points of especial interest to
tourists.
“Principal among these is the
National cemetery at Anderson
ville, where 13,000 Union soliders
are buried, and which is located on
the Dixie highway, which radiates
in two directions from Ameircus.
“Agriculture constitutes the prin
cipal industry, with a number of
cotton oil mills and industries
manufacturing agricultural ma
terials, principally fertilizers locat
ed at Americus.
The cotton warehouses of the
c>ty handle annually approximate
ly -24,000 bales of cotton and at*
the former Souther Field is a site
unparalleled in its adaptability for
erecting a large cotton mill with
necessary cottages, etc.
“Every religious sect has its own
house of worship in Americus, cx
cept dews, there being only a few

of the highest standard, being on
the accredited list of the University

FORCE GAS REDUCTION
WINCHESTER, Va... August 25.
A reduction of seven cents per gal
lon in the retail price of gasoline
was announced here yesterday
by the largest local dealer handling
Standard Oil company products ex
clusively. The (new price tis 20
cents pdr gallon for standard test
gasoline, the figure established by
a citizens’ committee, headed by
State Senator Harry F. Byrd, which
is distributing a carload of gaso
line purchased at 14 cents whole
sale through several small retailers.
Although no other price cuts were
announced it is expected that
other dealers will meet the reduc
tion. Senator Byrd said his com
mittee had options on more tested
gasoline at 14 cents, to be retailed
at 20 cents, after paying the spe
cial state tax of three cents and
allowing retailers three cents for
cost of distribution and profit.
Gasoline was selling here at 27
and 28 cents per gallon until the
citizens’ committee purchased a
carload and began selling it at 20
cents. The committee was -formed
last) week, when several of the
large oil companies announced dras
tic price reductions.
WELL KNOWN ALBANIAN
CAUGHT HUGE ROCK FISH
TIFTON, Aug. 25.—A 57-pound
rock fish caught with a rod and
reel near Marianna, Fla., formed
the chief viand at the big fish din
ner which Ed Solomon recently
gave to a score of his friends at
the home of his brother-in-law,
Chester Clements, near Brookfield.
His friends reported that after they
had eaten all they could, there was
still plenty of the big fish left,
