Highway Fifty Miles Long Now
- Being Driven Into Heart of
, Lake Okechobee Section
WEST PALM BEACH; Sept. 5.
a permanent highway
can be built across the muck soil
of which the Florida Everglades
is composed is now believed capa
ble of an affirmative answer.
This conclusion is based on the
"Wbrk being done under the direc
tion of William J. (Fibgey)
Conners, Buffalo, N. Y. publisher
and Great Lakes boat owner, who
is building fifty miles of highway
between West Palm Beach and
the town of Okeechobee, at the
north end of Lake Okeechobee.
Until recent years, the Ever
glades was what the name describ
es an open space ever -under
water, the soil too soft until a
very short time ago to bear the
W'eight of a horse, much less a
roadway designed to carry auto
mobiles and loaded trucks.
In the early days, the Seminole
Indians and white hunters and ex
plorers traveled the' country in
canoes. Then drainage canals
were dug and these afforded limit
ed navigation, the canals being
from fifty to one hundred feet
wide and having a depth of from a
few inches to several feet.
These facilities for transporta
tion and jujefcphone line for com
muni&giSm were insufficient, how
ever, to accomodate tlje residents
of the “upper glades” and the big
developers, of whom Mr. Conners
is one.. Palm Beach county under
took the'construction of a high
way through a thirty mile section
of the Everglades country includ
dedj the county’s boundary, but
the route of the road was diverted
before it reached Mr. Conners'
land.
The land owner then secured
permission from the Florida legis
lature to construct a road of his
own, exercising the power of emin
ent domain.
The muik soil of the Everglades
rests on a limstone formation,
with the muck from three to
twelve feet deep and the base
formation of a depth that has nev
er been' fully explored/ The
water table being normally from
five to two and a half feet below
the surface of the muck, the muck
soil impregnated with
water** all the' main outlet
drainage canals of the Everglades
drainage system are completed and
therefore the muck soil remains
soft. ' x
The methods employed by the
engineers is to use drag line ex
cavating machines to throw up a
sub-grade by making a ditch on
eacljlside of the route. . The ditch
es are connected with outlet drain
age canals and the surface water
and seepage 'is thus disposed of,
intended to produce a solid earth
en bank. ; At 'intervals, the exca
vating machines encounter depos
its of marl and shell,, and occas
ionally a soft limestone. This
mass is known as conglomerate
and adds solidity to the road bed
of muck soil.
A- spruce of supply of rock for
the hard-surfacing is believed to
have been" found in the granite
like rock excavated from the bed
of St. Lucie canal, twenty-five
miles long, one of the main outlet
canals of the Everglades drain-

Varney moved restlessly.
‘‘l suppose I have to thank you
for the loss of my dog,” he said.
The Oriental patted the hand
that held the pistol with tjje fing
ers of the other.
“A double tragedy, if I may say
so! I understand the- dog is the
friend of man—and you, poor fel
low, have sustained the loss of two
good friends at one and the same
time.” •
“You devil!’ ’
Chai-Hung blinked amiably.
“Thank-you, Mr. Varney. May I
request Zara-Khan to continue with
his work?”.
Varney choked.
“Look here, Chai-Hung, or what
ever yopr name is, I’m not in a
mood to sit here be ordered
about by you. ff you’ve come here
to shoot me—carry ‘on with it. If
not, clear out—and be damned to
you.” > |
“My dear Mr. Varney!”
ed the brigand with well-assumed
surprise, “you will, I hope, do me
the honor to remember that up to
the present I have requested you
to do nothing. My suggestion was
merely that Zara-Khan should pro
ceed with the work that my un
fortunate entry interrupted. It
was you who first mentioned shoot
ing, and I believe I anj right in
saying that you were about to
draw on me when I came in. A
distinctively unwise move on your
part, Mr. Varney, when onje re
members that Chai-Hung never
travels about alone. If I wanted
to kill you, my friend, there are
twenty others outside waiting to
help me. Yod received a message
from me the other dav?”
The trader shrugged his shoub
ders.
“A yellow, card .fluttered on to
the veranda, if that’s what you
mean.” <■
An ugly lighgt had crept into
the Oriental’s eyes.
As if by a’ given sign??, two
forms slid through the Hoorwav
behind Varney and secured his
arms.
Chai-Hung rose to his feet.
“Zara-Khan,” he said hoargelv.
“you will prepare your things and
'tattoo this Englishman. It will be
a little out of your lino, y must
tell you. for you will not be naid
for your work—and the picture
wUI not»be ouite the same!”
The man in the, turban had
changed visibly ffom brown to gray
and his tenth chattered. Re stawwb
from Chai-Hung to his chair—and
presently his horror-stricken eyes'
traveled back so the blue barrel.
“I am waiting for you to begin,
age system. The bank of the ca ;
nal is dined with this rock material,
and to use it Mr. Conners has
erected a rock crusher which is
said to he the largest in the
state. To distribute tfte rock on
the road bed, he has bought
eight gasoline locomotives, 30
mites of thirty-pound steel rails,
72 dumn cars and 60.000 cross
ties and will lay a dummy rail
road line parallel with the route
of the highway. Supplementing

Zara-Khan.”
And Zara-Khan turned with shak
ing fingers to his tray.
Chinese Pennington I—summon
ed in hot haste by his henchqian
—arrived at the foot of Varney’s
steps a bare hundred yards behind
Rabat-Pilai. He took the flight at
a bound and, pistol th hand, made
headlong for the trader’ sljving
room.
As he flung open the door, a.
scene of utter chaos met his eyes.
The door at the far end of the
room, was wide open. Between this
and where he stood a table had
been overturned, from behind
whjch r trickled a steady dark
stream. The chimney of the swing
ing lamp was shattered and the
atmosphere was ""thick with smoke
and soot. One window had been
wrenched clean from its fasten
ings and the bookcase in the cor
ner had fallen forward—arrested
half-way by a chair—and had tip
ped its z contents into a; jtfmbled
heap. >
He pushed the ta'bje ’back into
place and recoiled in horror.
A man in a turban of red and
gold lay full on his face. Beneath
him, lashed to a chSir, lay a sec
ond that kicked and rocked .to and
fro in impotent fury.
Pennington lifted Zara-Khan to
one side.
‘‘Varney!”
“Oh, it’s me all right!” growl
ed the other. “Your man arrived
just in time to prevent Mr. Chai-
Hung making sure his knife settled
both of us? For the love of Mike,
cut these confounded strings.”
"• “Where’s Rabat-Palia?” asked
Pennington, opening his knife.
For the first time Varney smiled.
“Dashed good man that! He got
here before Chai-Hung could round
on him—an severed his pistol
hand with one blow from a perfect
ly ghastly looking weapon.”
“Severed Chai-H'ung’s hand!”
The one with the ring on it. I
suppose he’s off after him-ytry
ing to get the rest!”
As Penningtgon stooped to cut
the ropes his eye fell upon the trad
ers bare chest.
Tattooed in the space that Var
ney had summoned Zara-Khan to
fill—was the grim sign of the
Yellow Seven.

NEW PLAN FURNISHES

Delco Concern Will Install Com

'For Ten Lights
The Delco-Light company, pio
neers in the farm elydtric {Slant in
dustry, who operate the largest
factory in the wofld fbr the manu
facture .of these electric plants
have jusb announced a new plan,
which is bound to be of vital im
portance to every .farmer and his
family who have been longing and
planinng tb have electricity in
their own home.
This plan provides, ft was ex
plained, for the installation, com
plete, of an electric plant and
battery, wiring of the house for
ten lights, ten complete drop
lights installed, with bulbs in
place and a special electric Socket
jfor connecting up motors and oth
er elecjric appliances.
While in the promotion of this
plan they have specialized in sev
eral of the popular models, any
of the many models can be se
crued under this brpad, ' compre
hensive arangement, it is stated.
The arguments in favor of this
plan of purchase, it was pointed
out are that the farmer knows, at
the beginning, just what ' it will
.cost to have electricity in his home.
Everything is covered in one trans
action. He does not have to cal
culate the cost of wiring his house
then the cost of installation and
the other items that enter into
getting electricity into the farm
home.
Here it is 'all worked out be
fore hand and a low price named
for everything complete, ready to
snap a switch and turn on the
lights. For those who desire it,
there is a plan for financing "the
purchase of the entire installa
tion, it was explained, so that only
a small cash payment at the be
ginning is required. The whole
plan, it was emphasized, is cal
culated to rflake it easy for the
farmer to have electric lights and
the other conveniences of electric
ity.
The appreciation of the benefits
of electricity for the farm has
spread amazingly since the Delco-
Light Company, seven years ago
began the manufacture and dis
tribution of farm electric plants.
