DANGER IS SEEN
JUST AHEAD OF US
Diphtheria, Measles, Whooping
Cough—Opening of Schools
' Spreads Disease.
Within a short time our schools will
open, and with the opening will come
c.ose cpntact and the assembling of
many children in close quarters. Colds,
typhoid, pneumonia, diphtheria, meas
les, whooping cough and other like
diseases are spread by contact or the
direct transmission of the germs from
one person to another. We must have
schools, and under present conditions
the childrep must be congregated in
close rooms, and in many places the
sanitary conditions are not good; the
common drinking cup is still in use in
many places; it is a great danger.
The common privy is in use in many
places, a great menace, and the drink
ing water is in many cases taken from
polluted wells and springs. The State
Board of Health statistics go to prove
that all such diseases as those men
tioned above always increase for the
first month of six weeks after schools
open. Parents should do their part
towards avoiding Illness by seeing to
it that their child has been given pro
tection by vaccination where vaccines
are of value, as for instance small
pox, typhoid, diphtheria and the like.
Every child should be vaccinated now
against smallpox. This is the only
vaccination that produces a sore.
There is little inconvenience from ty
phoid vaccination and none from tox
in-antitoxin. The protection offered
by these vaccines is definite —sure.
The toxin-antitoxin should be given
to the babies; all babies at the breast
should be given this remedy. It is
absolutely harmless, gives no unpleas
ant after effect and is a reliable rem
edy. A ’baby given the three doses of
this, vaccine is for its life protected
against diphtheria. The State Board
of Health has not as yet secured a
fund for furnishing this remedy free.
The State Board of Health has
made a contract to get the rem
edy at a government contract
price that makes it very inex
pensive. It is to be given just as ty
phoid vaccine by your family physic
ian. You cannot allow your baby to
be without it, and you can render a
great service by discussing this with
your neighbor. Every mother should
know about it, and this paper surely
hopes that you will be a missionary
tp spread the information. Let every
reader of this paper make himself or
herself into a committee of one to see
school houses and premises are made
more sanitary; that especially our
school houses and premises are made
clean and are kept that way Why,
did you know that you might save
some child’s life by doing this?
BILLS ARE RETURNED
MARKED “NO FUNDS”
The State Board of Health was
greatly disappointed that they did not
get an increase in appropriation from
the recent Legislature. The Board
was exceedingly anxious to be given
enough money to furnish free to the
citizens of our state Toxin-antitoxin
to eradicate diphtheria and put on a
Department of Life Extension, this
service to aid the physicians in our
state in making early diagnoses of
Cancer and Bright’s Disease. It is
thought by conservative physicians
that these things properly handled
and with the co-operation of the peo
ple would in a very short while
lengthen human life 5 years. All
theory says so and we have confi
dence to believe that with say $15,-
000 a year this work would save hun
dreds of lives in our state. hTe cry
of “No Money” defeated these worthy
causes.
If you should have a mad dog scare,
do not kill the dog if it can be cap
tured and put in confinement. This
is the safe way, the best way. If the
dog is mad it will die of rabies within
a week, then all who were bitten or
scratched should immediately take
the treatment; it is time enough. Os
course if the suspected animal is kill
ed or cannot be safely taken and kept
in captivity, then the brain should
be sent to the State Board of Health.
Do not beat the head up or shoot it
through the head, but preserve the
head as best you can that it may be
packed in ice and reach the Labora
tory in good condition.
The span of human life has been
considerably lengthened within the
past few years. It can be greatly
lengthened if the people will only
give heed to the advice of the phy
sician and the State Board of Health.
Every county should have a commis
sioner of health whose duty it would
be to see that the people remained
well.
Good sound advice of the physician
and the health officer is So often ig
nored by our people.
Continence is entirely .compatible
with good health and proper growth
and development.
Every baby born into this world has
the right to be born healthy and well.
You should know that you are physi
cally fit to be a parent.
Do not forget to swat the fly; make
it your daily business to kill every
one that gets into the house.
