»EWjTO)AY. OCTOBER 17, 1921 UUTHJMTEAMG MIMS IHCREASING Public Health Nurse Lauds Vis iting Nurse Plan in Effect At Rochester, N. Y. DBIKOiT, Oct. 17.—1 n spite of national legislation and other or ganized effort to reduce maternal j and infant death rates, medical! ad public health workers today are ; having to face the fact that the j pi esent high mortality among j mothers is on the increase in this | country, was the declaration made : today by Miss Mary Laird, Direc tor of the Public Health Nursing Association of Rochester, N. Y. in an address before the delegates at tending the annual meeting of the American Child Health Association Hotel Statler. Miss Laird’s I* was, “Can the Public Health , Nurse Do More to Reduce the Heath Rate of Mothers and In fants?” “AJter» two and a half years, [ study of the nursing needs of the city,” said Miss Laird, tracing the development of this first experi ment in working out a visiting nurse service for Rochester, ‘twe were convinced that the most neg lected phase of nursing work in Rochester was skilled nursing care for its mothers. So we started in tensive maternity work in one dis- L triet in conjunction wth the gener | al service. Our plan was to in i' crease the number of nurses and I have a continuous service, begin | ning with prenatal care and main ' tamed through the mother’s* con | valescence, all done by the same I nurse in her sub-division of the E district. gj. "We were first attracted to. this E district for our demonstration he ro cause of the increasing numbers of K our mothers working for wages g either in the home or in the fae ■ lories and by the fact that all of ? the babies admitted to the Infant’s I Summer Hospital from this district I showed greater neglect than the babies from any of our other dis tricts. Describing the efforts of the new maternity clinic to bring its pre-natal service to expectant mothers through the assistance of the practitioners of the district, Miss Laird made a plea for more adequate training of the physician and the nurse from more funda mental maternity health stand points during their medical and training course. The medical and nursing schools might protest, she said, against putting' one more thing into their already overcrowd ed Curricla. FIND BODY OF BABE WKAfThI) UN PAPER ALBANY, Out. 17. —The body of an unidentified - baby was dis covered Saturday afternoon near the old negro cemetery just north of the Georgia Northern trestle on kthe west side of the Flint river, re- PAnaihs unidentified, Persons who viewed the little body declared that it was decomposed to such a degree that it was impossible to say if it was the body of a white child or a negro. It was wrapped in an old shirt and an Atlanta newspaper bearing the date of June 26, but there were no marks of positive identification. Police and sheriff’s officers made an in vestigation, but there was nothing discovered leading to Hhei'dentity of the child or the cause of its body being unearthed. Opinion was expressed in some quarters that the body had been buried in the negro cemetery and that some animal scratched it up. POSTPONE CAMPAIGN FOR MOULTRIE ‘Y’ MOULTRIE, Oct. 17.—The an nual Y. Jones ran away and later was located in Detroit. Sheriff Noble secured extradi tion paper and had a fight of more than a week in the Detroit courts but had to leave Jones when his case was appealed. Sheriff Noble left today at noon for Detroit upon receipt of a telegram in which he was ready for him. It is probable that he has expended all the money he had in the effort by le gal precess to keep from returning to Cordele for trial.
