Non-Blight Fruit May Be Com
mercial Crop Here Within
Next Few Year*
Sumte county farmers are putt
ing in many acres of pineapple
pears, the new non-blight pear,
which is expected to become a com
mercial crop throughout this sec- '
tion within a few years, and sever
al orchards of wh'cn are already
bearing in adjoining couTities. Al
ready enough nursery stock has
been ordered by Sumter farmers to
plant ten tnousand
new.variety of pear, Tiff
formation given the TinSfe<|.«R>t
der, and a number of arc
investigating further before placing
their orders. One of these, a lead
ing Americus business man, has
been so favorably impressed with
the possibilities of the alligator
pear that he contemplates going in
to the business on a ’arge scale,
planting seventy-five acres to them
during the first year.
The alligator pear is described
by Layman B. Veeder, an expert
now here promoting their planting,
as comparable to the Keifer, which
once was extensively raised in
Sumter county, and the cultivation
of which was discontinued solely be
cause of their blighting qualities, it
being almost if wholly impossible to
prevent this condition after the
trees reached maturity. The alli
gator pear, however, is said to pos
sess superior qualities, being much
preferred for cannng because of
the smaller quantity of sugar neces
sary in their preservation. They
are also said to be better eating
fruit, ripening much earlier after
gathering, as compared with the
Keifer variety.
Trees now being panted wili not
come into bearing until their fourth
year and the first crop is usually a
small one, compared with later
yield, which have reached in ex
ceptional cases as high as 100
bushels to a tree, such trees being,
of course, very old. {During the
propagation and growing period the
treds must be highly fertilized and
cultivated constantly, but after thby
come into bearing both cultivation
and. fertilizer should be abandoned
to secure the best results, accord-
to experts familiar with their
culture. i"
