■There <s no more interesting'

venture, love and romance’ linked
to A period of history more colorful
than war and more lasting than
bloody conflict it stands out distinc
tive in literature and drama.
No W'opder then that when James
Cruze for Famous* Players—Lasky
transferred-this exciting conception
to the sitver screen that it became
at once the paramaunt of Para
mount pictures. ’
For its first season its runs in
in New York, Chicago, Boston and

everywhere and it stands today the
most popular and the best discussed
of all motion picture productions

a Nation.”

More than a quarter of a century ago, John Philip
Sousa assembled a band of the best musicians obtainable,
and in all of these years without assistance from individ
uals or communities, depending entirely upon the pop
ularity of his organization and its music for his financial
success, he has presented programs appealing to all classes
of people. . a */*»,.

his larger theme of bringing out the
wonder story of how the heart of
America was developed, it is the
narrative of the hardships and ad
ventures of those early pioneers
who followed the Oregon trail west

a dividing line some going to the
gold fields of Californa and others
northward to Oregon and Washing

BNIGIBE SOUSA’
Well Known Impresario Says
That the “Trick of It Lies
Knowing How”
Months before John Philip Sousa
and his Band gome to town, Harry
Askin drops in. says ha has just so
many hours to talk with the local
manager, and gets down to business
The local manager generally says:
“If you have so little time, Mr.
Askin, it was- foolish to come on
here; everything would have been
all right if left to me.’” ’
“And my boy,” replies Askin,
“that is just why I came on; know
ing that everything would be all
right if left to you, I ran in to
leave it to' you.”
Then he unloads his ideas, based
on previous knowledge of the com
munity, the population of the near
by towns, the trolley-radius, the bill
board acreage, and so-on. WhA he
gets through the local managdr, if
without previous knowledge of Mr.
Askin, will generally say:
“All right, Sir! We’ll get you a
good house—we’ll reach $12,00 if
the weather’s ok.

something for me, and a bit for the
railroads, and perhaps, something
for yourself? Let us say, $3500 in
all?”
And away he goes to catch his
