The greatest I amout eveq brought into Valdosta in any one month previously was 180,000 gallons, in November of las' year. , In the last or so there has been-fi steady increase in the amount,of gasoline handled here bat there has never -been such an i ty* crease as this in any one month, tht figures making a most interesting showing. • Oh the January figures the three cent tax means that $8,135,47 were paid, all of which is contributed by the people who ultimately consume ! this gasoline. Heavy Damage Done Near Griffin Not Reflected in Con dition of Central Belt Trees *r- MACON, February B.—Although heavy damage to peaches hsis'been discovered at the Georgia Experi ment Station at Grififn, iw such damage has been discovered in the Fort Valley and Byron district, ac cording to Oliver I. Snapp, in charge of the Government and State Lab oratory. Mr. Snapp has been busy for sev eral days investigating conditions of trees, but ho stated yesterday that he-had failed to find trace of damage. Buds are being held back and if there is nothing to cause injury there is every indication of a nor mal yield at least, growers say. In fact the growers have begun to lay the*' plans to have a bigger cull pile this year, than in the history of the industry in Georgia, so that better peaches will be marked. TWO BATTLESHIPS TO BE DISMANTLED SOON OAKLAND, Calif., February B. To the dirge of a chorus of steam’ whistles’, two American battleships, the Nebraska and the Vermont, ar rived here recently froqp, thejr lost voyage, a sail of 25 mile's from the Mare Island navy yard. They were the largest vessels ever to enter the inner harbor here. They are consigned to the scrap heap. It will require a year and a payroll of about $1,000,000 to dis mantle them. The scrap metal from the men-of-war will be sent to east ern steel works. The Nebraska, with a length of 435 feet and a displacement of 14,- 948 tons, was a training-ship during the world war. The Veftnont, 450 feet long, with a tonnage of 16,000. was in oempany with the Nebraska on the cruise afound the world in 1908. The Vermont was in Vera Cruz harbor when the Americans captured it in 1914>. In the world war she was a troop-ship. STOLL INSPECTS MACON TOURIST HOTEL SITES MACON, Feb. B.—E. A. Stoll, vice president of the Hockenburg System, of Tarrisburgy Pa., left last night for Florida after spending the day in Macon inspecting various pioposed sites for th'e location of a tourist hotel. Mr. SCbll stopped in Macon from the Chamber of Commerce, and continued his jour ney last night. Haris, Jr., who was reported so, desperately ill early this morning was that his condition was slightiy improved., Mr. Harris has been suffering from carbuncles on his neck and was taken to the hospital for special treatment Saturday. Thursday hi underwent an operation for the re moval of pus in the infected’ part, following which he became rapidly worse. j MISS ELEANOR ROSS WINS COLLEGE HONOR' LA GRANGE, February 8 Miss i Eleapor Ross, of Americus, has won jthe honor of being a basket-ball player on the ,La Grange College) University team. Much interest was shown nor athletic field this year and a spirit 6f rivaling was strong among the classes. Miss Ross play ed on the Freshman tea in which is always the strongest team in col-« lege. By her excellent playing in final Freshman-Junirfr game, she made a set of Red and Black college letters.
