General Weyler, 86 years old,
Who may be called by King Al
fonso (right) to succeed Primo
de Rivera (left.)
ment for a time.
The military junta which grabb
ed supreme power last September
has had a hard time frying to keep
its promises of sweeping reforms,
but disputes about the fate of fel
low generals are the things that are
sapping their strength.
Last year the Spanish army in
Morocco, fighting the Riff’s, sus
tained some of the greatest defeats
in the history qf the country.
All over Spain, regardless of
party, there arose a demand that
those responsible for the debacle
be brought to justice. The su
preme counsel of the army has con
demned one general to death and
another to 17 years: imprisonment
fbr their-alleged par) yr.the Mo
roccan affair. But some military
leaders men are'innocent.
The heads of the.army are thus
at A feeling is grow
irig in Sftain that it might be well
to return to constitutional govern
ment.
It’s hard to tell just ..what is go-
f THE AMERICUS TIMES-RECORDER
ing pn in Spain. As with Russia,
there is a heavy censorship. Also
as with Russia, no two persons seem
to agree in their reports. Lately
some newspaper reporters were wel
comed in Madrid. King Alfonso
and Dictator Rivera whispered soft
nothings.
The king loved Rivera and Riv
era adored his king. Apparent'y
nobody asked any embarrassing
questions and a nice,time was'had
by all in the big stone palace.
But there is something tp con
trast with this stuff. It is the voice
of the man who is the conscience cf
Spain—Miguel Unamuno.
Perhaps you never heard the
name of this professor of Greek :»t>
the University of Salamanca. He
, is the greatest writer in Spain. Me
is philosopher, novelist, poet, essay
ist and seer. Apparently, he ■>>
cupies ill .Spain a position similar
to that, f hq(d'by Tolstio in Russia
of the csfars.
Tolstoi was so great that even the
tyrannical czars did not dare lay
hands upon him. Unamuno is so
great in his country that even dic
tators seem to leave him immune.-
’ And these are the scorching word?
he recently wrote to a great Fren th
newspaper:
“Poor Spain today is victim es
the most 'barbarous reaction.
“We have come to the period
where they say no one demands lib
erty. Os course. For qnybody who
demands it has his mouth closed
with a gag and if he indicates with
his hands that he is gagged, they
fasten his hands.”
It is claimed people are com
plaining that the dictator’s prom
ised reduction in the cost of living
has not taken place and that a very
Strict censorship on the press is
maintained. It is pointed out thqf
the Marquis of Cortina has been
banished from Spain.
According to a tale, Rivera not
long ago presented to the king a list
of distinguished persons whom he
wished banished.
“Ah,” said the king, “you seem
to have forgotten one name.” So
saying, ho dipped his pen in the ink
and wrote—“ Alfonso.”

Presiding Episcopal Bishop

FUNERAL SERVICE FRIDAY

' —* if
DALLAS. Texas, February 19,
The Right Reverend Alexander C.
Garrett, 91 years of age, and pre
siding bishop of the Protestant Epis
copal church i nAmeirac, died at
his home here last night.
After building 54 churches and
serving as minister, priest and
bishop of the church for 67 years,
Rt. Rev. Alexander C. Garrett be
came the presiding Bishop of the
Episcopal church in America in
April, 1923, upon the death of the
then presiding bishop, Daniel Syl
vester Tuttle.
Bishop Garrett was at that time
almost 91 years of age and totally
blin He joked about his infirmity
by saying: “Being totally blind
I cannot see my friends. I
have to refuse to see them.” He
admitted then that he was the old
est living bishop in America, but
questioned the assertion that he was
the senior bishop in the world.
Bishop Garrett was born on No

Sligo, Ireland, where his great
grandfather, his grandfather and
his father, over a period of 150
years, had successively presided
' over Ballymore parish there.
Funeral services will be held Fri
day.

Will be quashed. The action oi.'
Judge Will Gunn, in closing the De
cember term of that court, Satur
day, autoamtically quashed these
cases, except for the fact that they
may be reopened at a special term.
T wanted to noli prosse the
cases,” said Solicitor Moore yester
day, “and give my reasons for
quashing each case. I shall confer
with Judge Gunn in the morning
and if he will consent to a special
term of court for the trial of other
cases, this may yet be done.
“In the DeLamar, Patrick and
Bloodtvorth cases the State’s princi
pal witness was R. F. Mills. He has
stated that he would never come
back to appear on the witness stand
again in these flogging cases. If
he should he brought back here as
an unwilling witness the State
could not travel with any degree
of success.
“In the other Yarbrough cases,
it is a fact tllat we have gone over
all of the evidence that the State
possesses, except one witness, R. A.
Hartley, and he has been in jail
several times since.the prosecutions
began. It is a rule of law that
where, a-case has been passed upon
by the court, that that particular
evidence van not be used again.
“M T. King and J. F. Alexander
have never made a demand for trial
and we can try them at the regular
