Abnormally Low Winter Tem

Beetles, Experts Say
FORT VALLEY, April 21. —Gov-
ernment and state peach laboratory
experts here today officially denied
the general concensus of opinion
among peach growers that the un
usual low temperatures during the
past winter have killed a high per
centage of the adult peach curculios
in hibernation. Some have formed
the opinion that the cold weather
had practically eradicated the pest,
they say, adding: these are indeed
very errooneous opinions, and broad
casting them throughout the Peach
Belt is seriously endangering the 19-
24 crop.
Judging from jarring records the
curculio is more numerous in peach
orchards at the present time than
they were a year ago, irrespective of
the abnormal weather conditions
during the past winter. Our jarring

this morning yielded 175 curculios
from 107 trees. On the same date
last year these same trees gave only
-74 beetles. The largest number col
lected from these trees on any morn
ing last year was only 138. A grow
er caught 700 beetles on 400 trees
by jarring a few mornings ago.
These figures clearly show that the
weather conditions during the past
winter have not killed out the cur
culio, and that at the present lime
peach orchards ir. Middle Georgia
are harboring many beetles which
are endangering this year’s crop.
There has been a general tenden
cy this year for growers to let up
to some extent with the spraying
program. Some have omitted the
first application altogether, while
others have altered the recommend
ed schedule. A word of warning is
therefore sounded on account of tne
unwise procedure in view of the pre
sent curculio infestation, as revealed
by recent jarring records. All late
varieties of peaches are now ready
for the second application, and grow
ers are urged to give their spraying
more serious and careful considera
tion.

Food Prices Show Decrease of
4 Per Cent—Gardens Cause
Cuts
ATLANTA, April 21.—1 n the
survey of ofood prices covering
fifty-one cities in the United States
for a period of one month, it is
shown that the cost of living is on
the downward trend, according to
Atlanta statiticians. The survey is
based or. government figures and e
ports received from private sources.
In twenty-one cities food prices
showed a decrease of four per cent.
Atlanta had a three per cent de-i
crease, and Birminngham nd Mo
bile two per cent decreases each.
As summer approaches ar ( d home
gardens add their output to the
family table, the cost of food may
De expected to show additional de
creases, The home garden unquest
ionably, it was pointed out here by
food experts, is a money-saver to
the average family and should be
counted in the family budget.
Gardens are bocomirg more num
erous in the back yards of Atlanta
homes this month. Unfavorable
weather retarded the starting of
gardens foor a time, but there is
little Likelihood now that acold spell
will come to damage the growing
plants.
As pointed out here by a num
ber of bankers and business men,
there is much satisfaction in having
Lhe vegetables fresh from the home
garden on the home table; the home
without a garden, theyasse rt, may
not suffer for spring delicacies as
they are shipped here from every
conceivable direction—but the home
with a garden has a very decided
advantage when it comes to count
ing costs.

Atlanta Man Announces Defi
nitely Intention to Get Into
Race For Commisisoner
Albert Woodruff, member of
the Legislature from DeKalb coun
ty, Atlanta machinery dealers, an
nounces that he will run for the
place of Commissioner Price, Geor
gia public service commission, sub
ject to the fall primary.
Woodruff gained some publicity
last year in his fight in the Legis
lature to abolish pool rooms.
Ir? his statement to the public
Woodruff says:
“I have definitely decided to run
against Commissioner Price in the
coming September primary.
“I have felt for a long time that
someone actively affiliated with the
business of the shippers of the State
Should be on the Commission, and it
is due somewhat to this conviction
that I have decided to make the:
race. It has been a long number
of years since one of our citizens
thus affiliated has been on the Com
mission. Reasons justifying this
represetation on the part of the
shippers of the State, as a whole,
are too obvious for discussion.
“I shall immediately begin an
active campaign throughout the
State and expect to go into every
County in the' State, In this way
of campaigning I will have ample
opportunity to thoroughly familiar
ize myself with the conditions
throughout the State and particu
larly getting a close-up view of the
agricultural interest, which to my
mind, is seriously awaiting a solu
tion in matters of equable transpor
tation.
“If elected, I shall strive to the
utmost to see that absolute justice
is done to shippers and carriers
alike, fostering every legitimate en
terprise to the end that Georgia
may maintain her stand in the fu
ture as ir. the past, as the Empire:
State of the South.”

CRISP WOMEN WILL
ORGANIZE LEAGUE
CORDELE, April 21.—A meeting
was held at the Assembly room
of the Carnegie Library Friday
afternoon at 4 o’clock for the pur
pose of organizing a Woman’s Civic
League in Crisp County.
This movement has been in con
templation by some of the leading
women of the town a>d county for
some time and during the week of
the cooking class, it was definitely
decided upon, but the date left open.
For some time it has been felt
that a working organization of all
the women’s clubs was a necessity
in order that cooperation might be
had when something of town or
county wide importance was to be
worked out.
500 GOATS SHIPPED
FROM EVANS COUNTY
CLAXTON, April 21.—-The goat
population of Evans county was de
creased by five hundred last week.
Two goat buyers were busy all
week, hauling, crating and shipping
the “kids” to New York City in or
der to supply the seasonal demand
for this class of meat.
In answer to question one of the
buyers stated that only a very few
goats were bought out of Hagan,
and it was anticipated that the new
stock law would force a heavy salo
of the animals in that vicinity.
Jimps Collins stated that he was
ill the market for 200 additional
head for stock purposes.
A reform of the calendar that
would cause Easter to fall on a fixed
day has frequently been proposed.

only two independent standards for
