MAN AND WIFE •
CLASH AGAIN i
OVER DAIJHTER
Wife Mocks Husband’s Victories
In Courts and Files Suit
Herself
RENO, N.ov. 10, —Two and a half
years of battling by an estranged
mother and father over a four-year
old child, featured by pursuits across
the United States, will culminate
soon in Reno’s divorce courts.
Principals in the case will be Mrs.
Hilda Betty Cooke, Canadian beauty,
and the wealthy James Henry Cooke,
Toronto barrister, both contending
for the custody of their daughter,
Shirley.
In one legal clash after another
the husbat.l has been the winner so
far—but a winner who went away
from the courts empty-handed. For
as fast as Cooke has obtained a new
legal verdict in his favor, Mrs. Cooke
has swept the child up into
and sped away.
Now in the courts of Reno the
wife, for once, is the aggressor. The
child safely in her possession, she
has just dismissed an application for
letters of guardianship and tiled the
stronger action for divorce.
Cooke is coming from California
to fight the case. Undismayed by
the fact that all his other theore
tically victorious legal actions have
brought him nothing tangible except
expenses, he has served notice that
he will continue to the last possible
recourse his relentless efforts to take
Shirley away from her mother.
Appeals to both the Canadian and
American governments have been
made by Cooke in the past. His San
Francisco attorney charged recent
ly that United States Senator Hiram
Johnson had aided Mrs. Cooke to
continue in possession of the child.
Since its inception, Cooke’s fight has
been spetacular. In 1923 at Ottawa
he sought a divorce, charging his
wife with misconduct and listing co
respondents as “Mr. A,” “Mr. B.”
and so on all the way to “Mr. J ”
Bußt the proceedings went for
nothing. A parliamentary commit
tee which heard the evidence turned
in a tie vote.
Mrs. Cooke thereupon began ac
tion for alimony. She lost. Then
Cooke obtained a writ of habeas
corpus granting him custody of Shir
ley. Mrs. Cooke and the child disap
peared.
After months of investigation,
Cooke traced them to America. Up
on his complaint, the U. S. lirff'igra
tion Department issued a warrant for
Mrs. Cooke’s deportation.
On a mysterious .“tip,” federal of
ficers visited a home in New Jersey
where it was believe! Mrs. Cooke
and the child were stepping. I hey
were not there.
Last June she appeared in Cali
fornia. Cooke rushed there from
Canada, and brought new habeas
corpus proceedings. These and the
deportation case both dragged.
SALARY INCREASE
COMES WITH
PROMOTION
CHICAGO, Sent. 28.—After a
ca’ eful durvev of the entire ’abor
situation extending from office boy
to president, indications ire that
positions showing increases in sal
aries require experienced help.
Consulting the president of one
of our largest industries, the writ
er inquired regarding the rapid
success of a certain young man who
had become general manager, and
who a few years ago was but office
boy; his answer was, Brown start
ed as office boy, the lowest salaried
position in our office, he was am
bitious and managed to purchase a
typewriter on small monthly pay
ments and after three weeks of
practice at home he was promoted
to bill clerk, which position gave
him knowledge of the selling price
of all merchandise. K'is next ad
vance was that of typist, which
taught him the numerous forms of
letter-writing and enabled him to
hold a stenographic position, giv
ing him complete knowledge of let
ter-writing. He was then made sec
retary, bringing him into contact
with all business details and quali
fied him for the general manager’s
office at ten thousand per year.
The same opportunity awaits ev
ery young man and woman. Educa
tion or age have nothing to do with
operating so simple a machine as
the type writer. We are informed
that a great piece of benevolent
work is being carried on by a large
Chicago mail order house in fur
nishing typewriters to people wor
thy of credit, by selling on small
monthly installments, so low as to
average about eight cents per daj
and actually teaching thei custom
ers how to use and operate any tpe
writer in about three -weeks’ time

We have heard “Fiddling John”
many, many times in vaudeville acts
by radio and through his Okeh rec
ords and his work here is just as
good as we ever heard, if not bet- i
ter. He has an original line of en-1
tertainment and is popular all over
the United States with his fiddling
and singing.
His “Virginia Reeiers” are very
good, especially the trick fiddler of
the act. The boy with the guitar is
good but will be much better when
he has had more experience.

Gleamy, Thick, Wavy
Hair in a Moment

A delightful surprise awaits those
who try this. When combing and dress
ing your hair, just moisten your hair
brush with a little “Danderine” and
brush it through your hair. The effect
is startling! Your hair will appear
twice as thick and heavy —sparkling with
life and possessing that incomparable
softness, freshness and luxuriance, and
just delicately perfumed.
While beautifying the hair “Dander
ine” is also toning and stimulating each
single hair to grow thick, heavy and
strong. Hair stops falling out and
dandruff disappears. Get a 35-cent bottle
of “Danderine” at any drug or toilet
counter and just see how healthy and
youthful your hair appears after this
delightful, refreshing dressing.

NEW HEART
DISEASE FOUND
Called “Waterfall Heart;’’ is Re
porte dto Medical Convention
By Dallas Man
DALLAS, Texas, Nov. 10. '
"waterfall heart,” one of the rarest
things known to medical science, was
exhibited at the medical clinic of the
Southern Medical association con
convention here. A man who had
lived in fear of death for years only
to learn that the loud murmur in his
heart was due to a harmless mechan
ical construction appeared before
several hundred physicians attend
ing the convention. The case was
reported by Dr. George L. Carlisle,
of Dallas.
The sound made by the man's
heart is that of a rush of water over
a precipice so violent that th e chest
wall tremble under the impact. The
condition is due. Dr. Carlisle ex
plained, to failure of a small blood
vessel to close after birth.
Dr. Carlisle said this was but the
second case he had discovered out
of a large number of heart cases. He
said that fear plays a large element
in heart disease.
Dr. Stewart R. Roberts, of Atlan
ta president of the association, with
other officials of the organizotion,
I were present.
