FREE HEALTH ADVICE
The State Board of Health it always
at your service. It la true that often i
they cannot do all that is desired,!
because they have never been given
the funds with which to do, but in-i
so-far as they are able they are al -1
ways ready and anxious to be of serv-;
ice to our citizens. Every county I
should avail Itself of the full benefitl
•f the State health laws; every conn-'
ty can well afford to have a full-time'
health officer. This is one measure,
of economy that every county should
have. The work done by a well or-!
ganlied health unit will pay for itaelf i
many times over. The full benefit!
can be secured by the passing of
this law by our grand jury* two sue
costive times after which the oom
mlssloners will set aside the neceesa-!
ry tax to put it into force.
This will insure a complete physl-,
cal examination for every school
child, besides the control of all In-i
factious and contagious diseases. It |
also takes care of the fumigation 01,
premises, control of mosquitoes and 1
vaccinations, besides sanitary meas- ,
urea. All counties should enact tbit .
law
BIRTHS ANO DEATHS MUST
BE RECORDED
The law says that births and death*
must lie reported to. the State Boar*
•f Health. The law provided that th*
Local Registrar should be paid for hi*
w®rk. Recently the Supreme court ‘
has ruled that the county commission I
er* have not the authority to levy a '
tax for this purpose. It is necessary j
however, for the births to be report-;
ed within ten days, and before a body I
can be Interred there must be a per-'
mlt issued. No other part of the law
has been set aside; the recent Legis-1
lature did not have time to pass a law
that would have corrected this defect,!
notwithstanding sueh a bill was intro
duced very early in the session. Why it!
did not get to so important a mattei!
we cannot explain. Its failure leave* I
Georgia in bad shape, and we w'ish to'
appeal to our county authorities in th*
strongest possible terms to see that
this law is enforced and that the funds
for the payment of the fees due Lo-1
cal Registrars be found and their bills J
promptly met.
It is useless for us to argue the ne-I
cessity of a record being kept: it is)
too patent to need argument: it it'
self-evident.
We feel sure that if the matter it
given proper consideration that al!
physicians, undertakers, local regis
trars and the people as loyal" citizens
will aid our State Board of Health in
this matter. Over fifty counties have
already acted favorably to the contln
nation of the payment of fees.
REPORTING DISEASES IMPOR
TANT THAT IT BE DONE
It is very essential that physician*
report all of their communicable and
infectious diseases to the Board ol
Health, it is the only index that th*
health authorities have of knowing
what diseases exist in a given county
or State. The physician should b*
prompt in making such reports, as of
ten something can be done to bene
fit the section from which such re
port comes, but if the report ig de
layed, assistance cannot be giver
as effectively. Every one whe
has a “ catching ” diseas*
should obey the rules of quarantine
and every family should be eager tc
protect their neighbor against sick
ness. If you have a case of sicknesi
that is reportable, remind your phy
sician to report It rjght away. H*
has cards furnished him for the pur
pose; the postage is free; it require*
only a half minute of hie time. De
all you can to protect your owl
against disease and assist your Stat*
Board of Health to get the necessarj
data, so that the report* may go tc
Washington on time. It is not an un
usual thing to have more deaths fron
a disease than there are cases report
ed This is neglect, pure and simple
yet it holds Georgia up to ridicule it 1
our nation.
