Too Much-Efficiency
\ J
“I am through with efficiency,”
said the efficiency man.
Constance stirred.
"1 am through with economy!”
She moved her head so that one
ey v - peeped out through the crook of
her elbow.
■ ,->eath to scientific management!”
he cried.
Constance raised her head slowly
ana stared at him. She met a glare
that alarmed her. He was standing
jusi opposite, across the library desk,
his eyes blazing with light.
“You have burned my diary,” he
said grimly. "You have burned my
notes. You have thrown into the
file all my hopes of reforming the
American household. Yes— You!—
yo„ type of the idle rich!”
Constance felt herself shrinking.

lie laughed boisterously. "You
thin a I’m crazy, don’t you?” he said
“I can see it in your eyes. Perhaps *
I am. Let it go at that; I should
worry. Now I’ll show you just how
crazy I am.”
H. Hedge made a dasli at the filing
case, pausing midway to Execute sev
eral bewildering steps.
“Observe that Ido not take the
shortest route,” he exclaimed. “Ha!
You did observe, Now watch!”
He laid hold of the uppermenst
drawer, panked it completely out of
the cabinet and shook it, as a terrier \
worries its prey. A second dash
brought him opposite the big fire- 1
place, where the last sheet of his
book on household graft were still
smoldering. He dumped the contents
of the drawer into the flames, seized I
a big brass npker and began stirring !
them frantically.
“There she goes!” he shouted as 1
the big manila envelopes caught at 1
the edges. “Everything from A to j

Constance was fascinated with
horror. But H. Hedge did not notice
that. He made another attack on the
tabipet.

I The remaining drawer shot from

fire, contents and all.
“There goes Tommy Treadwell,”
he chortled. “And Witnerbee every

He stirred things with the poker a

“Economy!” snorted the efficiency

He found more papers lying on the
desk and flung them into the mount
ing flames, whistling merrily, Con
stance was dumb and inert. She
was truly frightened. No efficiency
man in his senses could thus behave
she knew: and she could not yet be
lieve that H. Hedge had renouened
efficiency. Something had snapped
in his brain; she was sure of that.
Suddenly he snatched the poker
again and advanced upon her.
“See that?” he demanded, waving
it. “A very useful poker—large,
I heavy, anu strong. Sit where you are;
] don’t dare to move. I’ll be back in'
. half a minute.”
H e rushed from the library, and
she heard him running down the hall.
She sat there, powerless, even
tnough her instinct was to fly f ro m

A pity he was mad, she found her
self thinking -a pity, because in his
madness H. Hedge ser.ned almost
sublime. Certainly he was super
human. There was something so ut
terly .Efferent from the efficiency
nian that Constance, oven in her
» awe , was compelled to adr.:ire.
From anotheh part of the house
j s he heard in echo of heavy blows.
Heavens! 11. Hedge was killing
somebody!
Then a sound of rapid footsteps,
