i Amerious Recorder. : —: W. 1,, OIjKIMBR, Editor. Official Organ of Webster County. PBIPAY.DEC. 14.UWS. Tho next National Republican Convention will be held in Chicago on the 3d of Jane. We notice that our old Journalis tic friend, Mr. H. W. J. Ham, has secured the position of under door keeper in theUouse at Washington. Judge Crisp, “our member," is stopping at the Metropolitan hotel- in Washington,a* is every member of the Georgia delegation but Mr. Turner thFtuTb iTshobt. Those o! our subscribers who wish to take a ehanoe in tbo 11k- ooBDEh Gift Distribution should re member that the time is short and should take out their tickets at once. Remember that it cost you noth ing and you have a chance to se cure some splendid gifts. By pay ing in advanoe your paper is paid fbr, your conscience is clear, your sleep will be sound,^ou will have the best paper in Southwest Geor gia. and will have a chance to se cure a gift worth many times the subscription price. Don’t forget tbat the drawing comes off January 2d, and sec tbat you have a ticket by that time. If you cannot call at this office, send you* money by mail and we will ■end yonr tlokot by return mail, THE GEORGIA MEMBERS. The Washington correspondent of the Atlanta Constitution gives the following interesting gossip shout the Georgia members of Con gress, from whioh it will be seen that Judge Crisp bad rare good luck in drawing bis seat: Mr. Turner and Judge Crisp, of Georgia, have two ot the very best seats in the bouse. Judge Crisp chose the first scat next to the aisle •n the front row of the Democratic Mde. Richelieu Robinson bos oc- a ied it lor two years and from it vered bis famous assaults on the British lion. He must twist bis tail by the tip henceforth, for the fortune of the drawing threw him away on the outer circle. Tbo seat Held by Judge Crisp was that al ways accorded to Mr. Stephens, DELIGHTFUL DAWBOH. CHRISTMAS OOLOBS— BKAUTIKIX IIRt-J MITTES—PERSONAL POINTS. who never occupied it, but usually oil I several other leaders. A GOOD SUGHESTIOX. The Griffin News makes a good aoggestton- to Georgia railroads, whieh wo hope will rcoelve more attention than has been awarded to similar ones mado by tbo Reoobdku: The Western and Atlantia rail road officials have shown them- ■elves to he earnest and helping friends to the people of Georgia, * have shown that the “State road” is indeed an ally of the8tate, - - hie' ' by the manner in which they have treated the produce and- truck question. The accommodations that they oiicred in tho way of transpor- >rh taiion and the uastorly manner in which they have spread Informa tion in regard to culture and mar kets, shows an enterprise and lib erality and broad- spirit tbat is un common to other roads in this sec tion. Now that tbo season for travel to the South is at Ua height, why could not tLis road do something else, equally important, for the development of the country in whose prosperity it has shown such interest f Why could it not organ ise an excursion, or a series of ex cursions, to start from some cen tral point in the North—say Chica go or Toledor-and end at some point in this State or Florida, allow ing a stopover at any place along the road? This is the way thu boundless West has been settled, sad aticb excursions have always been well patrenixed, and we be lieve that an opportunity to view the South in the same manner would be eagerly jumped at. Can not the State road and its allies make a move in the matter ? stationed his rolling chair directly in front oi it. Mr. Turner is next to Judge Crisp on the same row. The only Georgia member not rea sonably well seated will be Colo nel Ratnainnd whose seat was ■brawn lor him in his absence. It chanced to oomo so late that he was compelled to go with the thirty or forty democrats who ait ou tho left, or republican side of tbo house. Hois in company with Mr.Converte* .of tho supposed murderer of Allen, Bright and clear is every morn ing; rosy with aurora borealis splendor is each evening. Time treads noiselessly, bat not on flow- ers, for so long has it been since refreshing shower, tbat tbo Goddess Flora has left scarcely a memento of her reign behind. The heavens seem made of brass, Nowitbstand ing, Christmas is coming, and though there be a “skeleton In every closet,” the gay world knows it not. We, tbat have travelled over “weary mile stones” remember our child-hood, its pleasures and the delightful recollections connect ed therewith. Hence we must not cloud the brows of our little ones, nor permit our cares to dim their bright eyes with tears. Christmas, Santa Claus and New Tear are synonomous for glee, happiness and joy, so let them “gather the roses while they may.” Fill.their tiny steokings, load every limb of the “brave old Christmas tree” and make it for them “a thing of beauty and a joy forever,” Set the Christ mas dinner with Its huge turkey juicy ham, salads, Jellies, custards, frosted cakes, ambrosia, syllabub and fruits, bo a “feast of season as well as a flow ol soul',” and though they live until the snows of many winters have silvered their locks never will it be forgotten. Yes, make the chi.drcn happy and no matter how thoroughly crusted with selfishness your heart may be, it will thaw like ice in the sun light. In making others happy, we are happy ourselves. Col. J. G. Parks is improving since the weatbet has becomo cold er, and it thrills the hearts of bis friends with joy to know that tbit gifted and talented lawyer has been mercifully spared, it is to be hoped for a long life of usefulness and honor to hia state and country. The streets of Dawson present a gala appearanco during tue after noon, when tbo ladies, like tropical birds, fiock out in their varied cos tumes of brilliant colors for the purpose of (hopping. It is notice able bow bright and pleasant look ing the Dawson ladies are, bru nettes the most of them, with dark eyes and bair. Setting in lront of l.ning’s last evening, I could blit take “dots,” and in verv lew places have I found more refined and Intelligent ladies, than in this attractive little town. There was quite an exoitement fow days since over the capture GREATEST DE CLINE IN PRICES OF CLOTHING FOB THE BEST OF THE WINTER, AT WE KEEP A PURE AND SELECT LINE OF DRUGS! and'will not have any tiling for our Prescriptions but what is the very best and freshest. Cohen* OPPOSITE BARK OF AMERICUS m opened op a fine line of DRY GOODS! Even Senator Edmunds appears to be finding out that the war is over, as is evidenced by hia intro ducing n bill to do away with the “iron clad oath.” Tho assuring manner in which Mr. Speaker Car* liale swallowed tbat piece of politi cal hardware was not at ail edify ing to the Republicans who bad been crvfng out against him as a Southern man or Valdosta. Some of the “hoys” grow happy over the six hundred dollars reward, but, when taken to tbo soene of the crime, the negro proved to be the wrong man, and bright hopes were blasted. From appearances at present, Christmas will be quite a merry one. A grand supper at the College on the night of the I9th, to whioh all the world it invited, a party, tea or bop for every night, a Christ mas tree for the young people, a domino for tbo old folks, and turkeys ad infinitum for every body in general. Report says that two of Dawson’s fairest daughters will soon change their names and seek a sunnier clime. Sami and water are battling fiercely fer supremacy, but the Artesian gets deeper slowly but surely. l’rof. B. C. Adams is off on an. Art Crnio tour, until school re sumes. Eufaula is at present his headquarters. Ho expects before bis return, to visit the land of golden fruit. At Janes’ drug store, some beau- tifril articles, suitable for Christ mas presents, can be found. I have rarely seen handsomer. Were I a “gallant knight,” and had a “lady fair” she should be the recipient of a perfume case. It is superb. Oc casionally I stroll sound to admire tbe Christmas goods, and next week they will be out in al. their splendor, so the merchants tell me. I would suggest tbat Pilsbury come down to tbe anpper, perbapa be may find the “inner man” so well attended to, that the cold will not affect him so severely.
