Previous to the election of Speaker on Monday iaat, we stated in tbe columns of this paper that wc were satisfied Judge Crisp would not so far disregard tbe wishes of ble constituents as to cast bis vote for Randall,—and hence, we wore not at all surprised to learn that the Judge had oast his vote and influence for the nom ination and election of Carlisle. The truth is, Judge Crisp is, al though a new member, oi a high order of ability, nud will in our The people have sustained a lorn in The trade dollar of from 15 to 20 'cents On the dollar, end now the Secretary of tho Treasury wants it tral knows that by Illicitly popuiat-j judgment make bis mark within ; f I the next two years. Just such legisln 'lion as tlhs is a fair type oft.be He- jpublican policy—a policy which >mifkes the speculator rich ami the Uaboriug mun poor. gJThc Joyful “Merry Christmas” greetings will soon lie heard in •every part of the land. While so imany are thoughtlessly enjoying the celebration in honorot the birth •of the poor’ babe of Bethlehem, a 'few will remember the indigent, lUic widows und orphans. Let every one who can assist in making it “a .merry Christmas” for them. /The main reason the Pennsylva nia iron men are shutting down their mills is that tile Alabama iron manufacturers are now telling iron cheaper than the Pennsylvanians ■can make it. The “business inter- •csts” of the Pennsylvanians would acorn to require t’. at an extra spe cific tax should be put on Aiabatua iron. That would bo tliu legitimate' outcome of tho protection doctrine. Mr. G. W. Oheves having bought the interest of his partner, Mr. U. %j. Weston, in the Dawson Journal, it now sole editor ami proprietor. Mr. Chovcs is one of the best edito- vial writers in Georgia, his articles 'being pertinent and pointed, and Che attention he has devoted to the agricultural interests of Ids section -should entitlo Idm to a liberal pat ronage from the people of Terrell. 'Wo Wish him nml the Journal sue- vooas. ■' 'The Courial-Jimrnal thinks the issue for 1884- is as dear-oul as a diamond nml puts it tiiiu; A reform -of the tariff: the rights of the pep- iplc aguinst the robber demands ot •the monopolists and an honest tub •ministration of the affairs of the government. ' If the republicans don’t like the prograupne—why, •the Ecyplian army seeqis sadly in steed ol recruits, and they can go and hunt for lil Muhdi. Some of the more candid lie- -publican papers admit that tho best policy of their parted* to try to dodge the tariff question—tc sub- ordinate it at the North tp a rcuew- •cd outcry about Southern outrages, and in the South by. a hypocritical demand lor “civil rights.” They rely upon section issues entirely to ■Uc.oy them up, and will give them different turns in tho North and in the South. The Democracy every where will do well to make the fight on a national issue which the Re- •publicans arc afraid to meet openly. The N’cw Y ork Sun says: “The ■Democratic party will be forced to tight on a platform of tariff for rev. ouuc only. It was badly whipped -oa that platlorm, and seems not to j have learned wisdom by defeat - ’ The Sun is mistakcu; the Demo- cuaU have never been whipped on That platform. In the last presi- -de-dial campaign it was defeated because it abandoned its platform aad tried to out-protectlon the pro tectionists. IA the Peirocratic party make a square stand on a .tariff for revenue platform in the atext-campaign a id it will be vic torious. dreds of fanners, s!io>vs that, Lite at tention of the people of the thick'y populated section* of the North is being turned to the South and it will inquire but a Ijbcral policy on Lhe part of the railroads to turn the tide of emigration Southward. Tlie Central Railroad of Georgia runs through almost every portion ol the State. Much of tho country through which it run* is, compara tively speaking, thinly popuiated;yet it bus a fine soil, a genial climate, lands arc cheap, and it is an invit ing country to Northern farmers wlio desire larger farms, or who Imvc not tbe means to buy the high-priced lands in the North. Now, why cannot the Central do as the Illinois Central is doing—get up cheap excursions in order to al low Northern farmers to come down and examine this country? The increase of population and products which would follow such a course would surely be beneficial to the Central company, for its business would Ire increased. The Central makes a bid for Florida travel, giving low rates and long time tickets, and advertises its line as the "Andersonville route,” yet ruthes its passengers through Georgia in the night, giving them no opportunity of seeing the coun try or of stopping over and com pelling them to go to Jacksonville to gel their tickets stamped before they can return. The same amount of energy expended in getting up excursions to points along tho line of its ronds would pay it as well m tiio present and far greater In the future. IVu hope president Raoul and his associates will take this matter into consideration anil take such action ns will greatly benefit Georgia ned (lie rend in their charge. No tariff can bo levied, no tariff law can be framed, even "for reve nue <»i/,v,.” without giving inciden tal protection. That is what tho Democracy lias claimed from the days of Jackson until now. And that “incidental protection” is nil that manufacturers nml capitalists have any right to, or any right to claim. The incidental protection is inevitable and canuot be avoided. Tiio revenue muni be raised in part by duties oil imported goods, and these duties afford incidental pro. tection, and all the protection tho government has any right to be stow. A event he shall decide to devote his time and attention to the study of political and governmental ques tions. Our county is not now in the Congressional district in which Judge Crisp belongs; nevertheless, we take the liberty of saying to tin people of the district in which the county of SurateC is embraced, that they cannot do better than to con tinue 'lie JudgOrin the place that he now occupies, and in which wc do not doubt that be will alike benefit and honor, his people and himself. John B. Gough, the temperance lecturer says, “we must educate the young up to a sentiment against tho use of intoxicating liquors as a beverage, before wc can Successful ly enforce a prohibition law.” Gough is about right.
