A section of country with snch a showing as that ought to Oil np its quota of population with good, substantial farmers, and no donbt would, were the facts properly brought to the notice of those seek. Ing desirable places to locate, While visiting Castle Garden, New Yoik, some years age the writer remembers to have seen there an accredited agent from Arkansas, whose duty waa to distribute among tbe recently arrived emigrants, maps, circulars and other docu ments showing the advantages to be gained by locating in tbatatate. The agent was acquainted with the different section* of the* state, and coaid thus convene intelligently with the emigrant, upon matters ip which they were moat interested, ita elimate, productions, cost of going there, etc. So far at I know, this sgsntor some other is etiU maintained there. The re sult is that Arkansaa is fast filling np with an industrious people, and is making rapid strides towards equaling her sister states in wealth and material prosperity. What is to prevent Georgia from doing like wise T and with bitter result*, be- cause her climate is superior to that of Arkansas or Texas, towards which the tidu of emigration, and migration as well, seems now to be flowing. Farms in this seotion, as now managed, are unprofitable, it Is true, but there are ne good reasons wby they should be. But so long as farmers pay$5.00 for a snflloient amount .of guano from wblob to raise $5.00 worth of corn, with their own labor thrown in gratis, they roust not expect to make any money, but on the con trary to grow poorer every year. If the fertilizer* accumulating about every feral were csre/Ully composted and protected from the rain there would be no nee of mort gaging one’s larm for guano. There would be to the added benefit of a steady increase la the fertility ot tbe soil. Tbe conoentrsled fertil izers are simply plant food and nothing else. They exciciso no mechanical action upon the soil liko animal manure and decompos ed vegetable matter, which not only supply food for the growing crops, but they arcato the the soil and render it porous and friable. Their effect too lasts for year*, while the concentrated artiolo is all evaporat ed within a few months alter ap plying, some writers even claim that under certain conditions ot moisture and beat they evaporate and disappear within a few weeks. In some parts of New England, where tbe sod is naturally very poor, one-third of tbe farm is al lowed to rest each year. The grass and weeds that comes np on this ground tbst is lying blloware plow ed under for green manure, clover often being sowed for that pur- pO80, This treatment results in good productive land that otherwise would answer no useful purpose other than assist in bolding mother earth together. Excuse this long letter upon a subject the writer himself knows but little shout. I have written it thinking {lossibly it may awaken a little interest in a subject ol most vital importance to any agricult ural community. Joiixpbsbvillb, Feb. 4 Fine weather for business and the far mers are happy. Home of the ear ly birds will.be planting corn in a few days. I will start about the 14 th if Uie ground ia not flrosen or t6o wet. February corn ia moat al ways a certain crop, as it makes before the hot, dry season. I ex amined my wheat Ukday, and I think at least two-thirds of it wat killed, and the ballsnce, from ap pearances, looks ss if it would die, but always a poor prospect for a good wheat crop. Spring oats are coining up and look well. It la about canc planting time, with no se*f pane in the country. We ex. pCQted a crop this year ftom last year’s roots, but they Were all kill, ed by late feeexes. If any one baa any cano for sale let me bear from yon. I bear that the Brnnsviok and Western Railroad la earning, but no body believes it. Too good to ba true. I see Americas will not get the 'triad to Buena Vista. Now if you feaht 'a paying road, aad one tbat will bring you cotton andtrade, build yon a narrow gosge from yonr city to Fionaot, aad then if theB. and W. i* ever built yon can then divide the trade with Colum bus. If not yon will lose.lt all. 8everal of oar farmers have tried Americus as a cotton market this winter and were well pleased and says for btr and honest deal ings Ameriens^takes the cake. We want and need a railroad, and waat it from Americus. From tbe onraing and hol.owing we .‘hear on Saturday nights and Sundays, tbe d. f. is doing a fine business.
