Let me catch you thle morning
with a story?
The eoene U laid in Vermont!
A boat sixty years ago their lived
in that state, in the village of
Craftsburr, a worthy Methodist
couple with live eons. They were
neither rich nor poor, but well-to-
do,thrifty people. They pare their
boysahound hut limited education,
the elder boys helping, rather, to
edueate the younger oucs, who had
that advantage.
As soon ns the youngsters grew
up, four of them were crowded out
of the home-nest under the inevit
able law of development in restrict
ed communities. Tbo farm and
the property would not‘support
live families or more. One of the
boys took possession of the home
stead, and the others went out in
to the world to make their way
alone.
Now here is where the story be-
gin*.
Here we have four boys, born of
the same parents, trained under the
same discipline, with about the
same habits and intelligence. One
perhaps was brighter than another
—this one a UlUe more energetic
than that one—or with perhaps the
• advantage ol a term or two more
at school . But as .they went qway
from home, two by two. it is fair
to presume that-one couple meas
ured even with the other, and that
the chances of each couple were
about equaL
I have neglected to state that the
name of the family was Rswson.
But what became of the boys ?
Two of them, William A. and
Edward B, came to Georgia in
about 1835. The other two went a
little later to Iowa. Both couples
lived for awhile in country pre
eincts, and then moved to the cap
ital city of the rtales in which they
lived—one couple coming to At
lanta and the oi her going to Des-
moinea. By another coincidence
the two stales in which they eet
tied ran parallel with each other at
the last census—there being but
8,000 difference in their total pop
ulation in 1870 and 80,000 in 1880
Itoilhek* two states that bavo
grown pari passu the two couples
have ImWlOhgjIaborous and steady
lives. “Tody bavo neither specu
lated, been dissipated or reckless.
Neither has met with special calam
ity or backset,aodUmltiisr caught
n chance-fortunq by marriage or
otherwise. They have Invested
carefully, been prudent and saga-
ciotis^hd always honorable in their
dealing!. ., bo-.
Which has succeeded
the Iowa couple or the Georgia
oouple ?
Either oi the Goorgiana has been
worth at any time in tho past ten
years, more than both of tbe low.
an’s combined, aad this too, in
•pita fifa war that freed their slaves,
destroyed their houses, and reduc
ed twP lanugos by nearly half a
the remnant Of his fortune and it
now worth near about $250,000.
These fortunes have been mode by
farming, merchandising, and by
the increased value of land in which
they were interested.
The Iowa couple, quite ee labor,
out and steadfast and pursuing
much tbe same life, have nut accu
mulated tbe two put together as
much as cither of the Georgians in
spite of the war in which'we were
detested and in which they were
victorious. ,
And what has become of the fifth
brother who remained in the home-
nest in Vermont, and who bad all
the patrimony? With gopd edu
cation, earnest and energetic, and
startiug with more than aH the twat
put together, be is still making the
scanty living out of tbe Vermont
hills, that be made fbrty years ago
when became into tbe family prop
erty, and wiH doubtless send his
children into other states to
earn the competency they can
hardly hope to make in their na
tive state.
It is my opinion that if the experi
ment of these brothers was dupli
cated a thousand times-i.e.—if there
were two thousand oouplcs of equal
strength and of similar habits half
of whom went to lows, while the
others went to Georgia—the ag
gregate result would he the same.
I believe that here in the states on
i bey go and larger results in the
end, than anywhere else in tbe
world. As for tbe Vera ont broth-
er who they sll envied,’doubtless
when, he took the family home
stead, he bee done hie fall duty,
but legs behind the rest. His con
ditions are restricted and bis field
a scant one.
Appropriation for Flint Birer.
ns^a Clarion.
Mr. Crisp has asked Congress
tor en appropriation for Flint riv
er above Albany. We hope tbe
Georgia, members will see to it that
the important work below that
point gets tbe amount necessary
to thoroughly open tbe river to New
ton and Albany. In the advant
age the Northern States have bad.
many little creeks have received
thousands of dollars of the public
money. Connecticut river, for an
example, no longer than the Flint,
bos received, first and last, five
millions. Money lias flowed more
freely than the waters of many
Northern streams—money from tbe
national treasury. Do we believe
in the unscrupulous plundering of
tbe treasury ? No; but tbe North
has cot more than her share. Now
give the South equally as mucli and
then apply tbe good old safe doc
trine as to economical interns I im
provement. To improve Southern
rivers now is simple justice. Let
it be done.

One of the lew thiage that would
peculiarly atriko a stranger in bis
flrst glimpse of Smithville is the
Immense amount of railroad busi
ness done here. It being the Junc
tion of the Albany branch necessi
tates a great amount of transfering.
and though tho agency at this
plaon gets no pecuniary credit tor
it, still, it throws considerably
more work upon the local agent,
so much, in fact, that very recently
they had to give him an assistant.
To give some idea of tbo magni
tude of this business, on last Sun
day! there were at this place 9 lo
comotives, 73 cars and 52 em
ployees' of the Centra! Hailr.-ad,
and this is no uncommon occur
rence. There is 15 trains daily nr
riving .at our. depot.

“The paradise ot the lazy man
is found In the averago Georgia
daily newspaper offloe,” said my
Georgia friend. "1 remember last
spring catling on tbe editor of a
daily paper in a thriving little
town, about 5 o’clock in the even-
lng jnet as he wee going home.' I
went with him to hie home, where
we bed supper. Af'er supper we
tfifled with a black bottle and some
cigars until 7 o’clock, when I arose
and offered excuses for retiring,
upon tbe plea that I did not desire
to Interfere with his newspaper
work. 'You don’t interfere,’ he
•aid; ‘we’re going to take a ride.’
Sure enough, we were soon riding
rapidly behind a good trotter, un
der a delightfully starlit sky. -Re
turning about 10 o’clock we looked
at the black bottle agaiu, and then
lit cigars and exchanged stories
on the veranda. I was so interest
ed that I did not mark tbo flight ot
lime. ■ Some time alter midnight I
started op suddenly, and said I
must bo going to the hotel, and
begged bis parvlon for keeping him
so long from his work. ‘Nonsense,’
bu said, ‘I'm not going to tbe office
any more to-night. I’m going to
hed and so are you, and not at tbe
hotel, either. Come inside.’ ‘My
dear air,’ I burst out, ‘who does
your work at the office) I saw no
one but a man and a boy there.’
‘You saw tbe foreman and assistant
foreman,’ he replied, puffing lazily
long rings ol smoke ‘That’s my
whole working force. The paper
is all ready at 5 o'clock in the
evening. They come around again
about 4 o'clock in the morning rnd
put the paper to press. If there is
anything in tbe box they pal it in
type.’ ‘Bat who puts things in the
box?’ ssid I, tortured by curiosty.
‘Oh,’ he raid, nonchalantly, ‘the
town policemen, when there is any
thing. When they make an arrest
they |-nt it in tbo box—if they don’t
forget,’ be added with delicious
naivete."

made-enough to sleek a little store
ter himself, in which hie brother
joined him. In 1863 be was worth
$GOO,000, and hia brother, perhaps,
half as much. All of this, save a
small amount, was swept away by
the war. With tbe few thousand
dollars left him in 1865, he began
lite anew and died in 1879 worth
more than $300,000. Mr, K. K. find upon reaching New York he
traced him up. lie found that tho
canine belonged to Mr. K. It. Hearn,
N. •!., was named Hector, of pure
St. Bernard breed, and was, be
yond all doubt, the largest dog in
tbe world. Mr. iitarif stated posi
lively that the dog was not for
sale, but a check lor $4,000, the
largest amount ever paid for n dog,
was more than he could refuse.and
Hector became Mr. Emmett's prop

inches, and when measured from
tbe floor to tbe centre of the should-

tbirtv-seven inches. He has a
