* You can scarcely pick npa Ueor
gin paper that does uot contain an
Article in relation to soma railroad
wanted for that locality, and they
give very good reasons why snob
railroads should be built. Pickup
a map of Georgia and contrast its
railroad lines with tho Northern
and Western states and see how
few we have In comparison,
may be said that Georgia is not
thickly populated as those states
end therefore does not need as
many railroads. The time was
when the railroads followed the
population, hut that time has pass
ed, and now the railroad is the
pioneer of civil xstion and opens
the pathway for population. Look
at the railroad In Florida to Tampa
—how great is the population along
Its line t Before It was begun the
lands along the lines were worth-
loss, because there wai no commu
nication to them, and now they are
being taken up sioog the entire
line. The great Western states of
Kansas, Nebraska,,Minnesota and
Dakota were developed by the rail
roads built through them, and they
had not half the resources that
Georgia offers. That we need more
railroads is evident. !Thp few tbst
we have offer but little .competition,
because there are few cross lines.
Take the map of Georgia and look
o.er it auil you will be surprised
at the .few competitive polnta—in
deed, .those towns are lortunato
which have, one line of railroad,
and- so lew are the Hues of road
running to suy one groat centre
that even where they, cross thore
is no great competition. The Sa-
vrnnah News recently spoke of the
great need of Savannah for new
railroad lines from that city through
a territory which should be con-
tributivo to her (rode, one of the
lines being to Amerieus. The char
ter for such a road has boon grant
ed,the company organised and the
people along the. line anxious to
have it built and williug to do all
S ey van to aid It. The line runs
rough a country rleli in timber
and agricultural resources. Why,
then, has it not been built? Its
advantages have lieenduly ««t forth

try'and of Kugland wo know, for wo
have been Conversant with much
of its Inside workings Irora its in-
cipicncy j but so far no capitalist*
have been found willing to put their
money in it. . Thuro must he some
reason for this uuwilltngncas ofcap-
italist* to invest in Georgia rail
roads, for iryou will stop to think,
how many roads in Georgia have
heep purchased or built by foreign
capitalists during the past live
yeata? The question then comes
up, why arc not more railroads
built in a country whielt needs them
so badly and whose pcopla are so
willing to aid in building them ?
We think our answer to this ques
tion can bu found in the lUilroad
Commission with its arbitrary pow
ers. Few men care to place Ihcirmou-
ey in property which at once passes
under tho control of three men with
unrestricted powers os to the reg
ulation of that property. How
many men would invest their mon
ey in merchandise if they knew the
prices at which they were to sell
that merchandise would he regu-
Jsted by a commission of three
mon? Capital is conservative bud
- avoids known risks, and for that
reason it avoids the railroads of
Georgia. Just so long as Georgia
retains its present lUilroad Com-
■ y. ' . |
mission, with its present |iowers,
just so long will the want of more
railroad facilities be folk Can we
afford, if wc wish to develop our
‘state and keep abreast with the
' march of progreee, to keep up a
* terrier which shuts out men and
JmdRUy that wc negd to asAitt tie ?
If we can, then tho lUilroad Com
mission may lie a wise provision;
'but if we cannot, then the sooner
the law creating it is Amended tho
better.
MAKING H18 MARK.
Our member of Congme, Hon.
C. F. Crisp, seems to be making
bis mark in Congress. He bag been
appointed on aevcrsl Important
committees, made a forcible speech
on the Chalmers. Manlhg election
contest, and now the Washington
Post says: “The Houae Commutes
on Pacific Railroads has agreed to
favorably report, a bi(^prepsrcd by
Representative Crisp, wblcli Isa
substitute tor bills introduced on
the same subject, to compel Pacific
railroads to psy the cost of survey,
log and *010011 ng lands that have
been granted them by act of Con-
areas. In default of payment with,
lu sixty daya after the passage ot
tbe ptopoaed act the Attorney
General is directed to bring suit
again*’ tbe defaulting roads. Uotil
tbe question of forfeiture ot Unde
granted to tbe Northern Pacific
road is determined by Congress the
provisions of this bill cannot apply
to that railroad com|isny. About
35.000. 000 acres of inud have been
earned in good faith by Pacific
railroads, one-seventh of which
have lieeu patented. Toe Govern
ment baa surveyed over 88,000,000
acres, and for till* rurvey the rail
roads owe about $8011,000. Tin
passage of the net will com|iel tbe
Pacific companies to (my taxes to
tbe States in which the laud lies.
Of Urea* Stales, Kansas, Nebraska
and Colorado are most interested.
The Union Pacific baa earned abeut
18.000. 000 seres of ita grant,8,000-
000 acrea of wbieh bav- been select
ed, leaving 11,000,000 acres lor
which the cost of survey will have
to be paid.”
la the Mobley county department
of tbe last RepuUiesn appears an
artieie reflecting upon tbe integrity
of tbe business men of Amerieus,
charging them with having practic
ed extortion upon the people tff
Marion and Schley counties by
charging them from fifty to three
hundred per cent on good* sold on
cedit. The writer Say* the people
of those counties (iroposc to build
a railroad to Anderaonvilleand then
go to Macon to bay their good*,
where they can procuro them at
eight per cent. Wc think the writer
doe* injustice to the merchants ol
Amerieus, who have always been
ready to supply the people ot sur
rounding counties with goods as
cheaply os they could procuro them
in Macon or any other city. We
bo, a tbe people of Marion aud
Schley will succeed in procuring
then railroad, and there seems to
be a very lair pro*|>ecl of their do
ing so; but wo think it would be
greatly to their interest to accept
the propoeition* of our people and
build the road to Amerieus, lor
they will find Macon rather a dis
tant point at which to do their bus
iness. Supposes farmer of Marion
or Schley wishes to procure sup
plies on credit or borrow a few
dollars, can lie go to Macon, where
he is not known, and gut them as
easily and Cheaply as in Americas,
where ho 1* known? We think not,
ami tlic planters of Mnrion and
Schley will find, after they have
built the road to Andersonvillc,
that they have been playing into
the hands of a few men in Buena
Vista and KHavlIle, who fear Am
ericas a* a competitive point, but
who know that Macon is too dis
tant to interfere with lhcm 4 When
the farmers of Marion and Schley
“mortgage their homes in the fu
ture for guano, meat, clothing and
whisky” to strangers, instead of to
neighbors, they will ami that the
rate of interest will not be ns low
as the writer In the Republican
would lead them to cx|>cct, and
they will wish that they hail plnced
themselves in the hauils of neigh-
