Nearly all our citizen* are indul
ging in that costly luxury, tho
“crop mortgage.” Bacon 18, flour
$18, corn $1.35, other goods in pro
portion until Oct. 15. Such Is the
ruin of tho improvident Georgia
farmer. Next fall, there’* from
bale to 3 bale* for guano, some for
snppliea and tbu* the poor, short
sighted husbandman toil* through
the burden and heat «t summer
and ihiver* through the cbeerleu
winter, all to aatlify the voracious
appetite ot the insatiable “crop
mortgage.” AU this, too, in n land
that ia so much blessed. Here we
can grow something to eat every
month in the year. Nature pro
vides « lavish abundanoe of fruit

would euffloe for theeupportof the

year round. Poor self weaned or
phans that we are, preferring the
gross and unhealthy sap of

our own freely-giving mother.
Talk of raising our own hog and
hominy. Let me tell you, Mr. Edi
tor, until the people of Georgia
learn cither to raiso what we cat
or else bo content to cat what wo
raise, we will always be tho slavos
and bondsmen of the “orop' mort
gage." If wo can’t raiso baeon, wo
most learn te cat something else
besides bacon. Ponder on these
things, men of tho Sonth, and let
ns make a mighty effort to rend
the shackels of the tyrant. Not by
repudiation, but by steady liquida
tion. Sava everything, and then
make everything. Don’t wait till
you make to begin seving, but be
gin saving first. We may not bo
able to cut the links immediately,
but if we’ll bnt try onr sympathetic

suffocating form of the Anaconda,
and forever free ourselves lrom tho
terrible “crop mortgage.” After
drifting so long in the current onr
crafts may not lie able to wheel
about and stem tbo current, up
stream, but we can cast out tho an
chor and gain a little strength to
ascend the stream ere we resell tbo
terrible cataract of ruin and deso
lation that lies before. This ap
peal comes not from a theoretic
and speculative view, but from
an unfortunate personage who has
experienced the misery that is suf
fered by those who become suffer
ers of tho relentless “crop mort
gage. M. M. P.

John Dixon, tbo white man now
in >11 awaiting the trial for point
ing a loaded shot-gun at a young
man, is rather an odd character.
Last Friday be concluded to quit
eating with a view of starving ton-
self to death, and did not touch a
mouthful during Saturday and San-
day. Sunday morning he tried to
borrow a razor from Deputy Sheriff
Bolder, to take a shave, whioh
request was refused. He then
wanted to borrow Holder’s knife,
bnt Troy told him that the only
way that be could commit suicide
in jail was to bu$ his brains out
againat the wall of hi* oclL Hb
continued his fast, however, and
for awhile seemed determined te
atarvo himself to death. His fast
ing evidently gave hi* mind a pious
torn and on Tuesday he sent fora
preacher to pray with him. He
was visited by Mr. Smith, the col
porteur, who talked and prayed
with him. On Wednesday Dixon
professed to have been converted
and wanted some one to baptize
him. He also broke bis fast ty
esting s flap-jack, which he olsinw
to have been tbo oaly food be tod
eaten in nearly a week. His mind
seems fo bo in quite a turbulent
stato and although anxions to shuf
fle off hi* mortal coil, is not happy.
Since his last incarceration his wife
has sworn out a warrant against
him charging him with beating ter
unmercifully. There seems to to
but two chances for Dixon to es
cape the chain-gang. One ia to try
the insanity dodge, and the other
is to starve to death. Dixon’s felt
ing calls to mind a case which hap
pened in Lumpkin many years ago
when Jndge J. M. Scott waa sber-
ig. A white man was under sent
ence of death and concluded to
starve himself. H* fasted thirty-
one day* when be became so ex
hausted that he concluded to oat
something. Ho ate one meal and
died. Tula should be a warning to
long-time fiutars that when they
commence (kiting it must to kept
up.
