For jean* a feud bss existed be
tween the Southwestern railroad
and the people of Americus. As
to the merits of the case ws bare
Mt been fully informed, but we do
know that neither party to the feud
has been benefitted by it, for tbe
very simple and good reason that
their interests are Identical, and
one eeuld not be injured without
injuring the other. One of the re-
■alts of this feud was tbe organize
tion of tbe Railroad Commission,
which while it has not beusflUed
oar people has hurt the railroad.
In spite of discriminations by tbe
sailroad agairst Americus, it hae
grown in population and prosper!'
ty, and in spite oi tbe Railroad
Commission the Southwestern rail
road has managed to lire and pay
reasonable diridenda. It is true
that the growth of Americus might
hare been larger and the diridend
oi the railroad been greater, but
for this feud, and it is for this re*
son that we think it time to oali a
halt on our part, send out a flag of
trace and see if we cannot make
terms honorable alike to both par
ties. By working together we can
both be benefltteu. Americus is the
natural commercial centre of South'
west Georgia, and not even the en
mity of tbe Southwestern can de
stray It. although it may oripple it.
With the friendly aid of the rail
rand authorities Us growth and
prosperity can be greatly enlarged,
and as its trade reaches out and
embraoes more territory the rail
road is benefitted by increased bus-
mess. We have a splendid country
that needs developement and in
that developement both Americus
sad the railroad are interested, and
■houtd work together. We have
season to believe that by a proper
movement on tbe part of our bus.
loose men Inch a reconciliation can
bo eflhoted between tbe railroad
authorities and our people as will
make friendly relations and bring
about a more perfect and Just un
derstanding between the parties.
TOTED PAIB.
On Wednesday we published an
article from the oommitteeappoint
ed by the City Oounoll to negotiate
with the officers efthe Buena Vista
railroad and secure subscriptions
for the same. In this article the
committee give tbo correspondence
that has ensued and tbi subscrip
tions they rccoivod. A perusal of
tbe article by a person without
prejudice will convince him that
throughout all tbe negotiations
RAILROAD TO PRESTO*.
List week we published an item
from the SmtihvUlo Enterprise re
garding a project to build a rail
road from Bmithvlllo to Preston.
On Wednesday we had a call from
Mr. Nicholson, of Preston, who
said the people of Webster county
were cnthusiastlo in regard to the
railroad, but preferred to have it
run to Americus, and would oo-ep.
erate with our people to that end.
Already $1<,500 has been subscrib-
ed in Webster, and Mr. Nicholson
thought tbe amount could be in
creased to $36,000 or $30,000.
From Mr. Nicholson we learned
that President llaonl, of tbe Cen
tral, bod written a letter to parties
in Smitbvllle and Preston, saying
that if the people would grade,
bridge and tie tbe road, the Cen
tral would iron and operate it.
If tbe people of Amerlous will
go to work at once and co-operate
with tbe people of Webster, we
have no doubt but that this road
could be secured for Americus.
To do this, however, tbe work must
be done quickly and harmoniously.
Wo have no doubt but that the
necessary amount could be raised
in this city in a few days, and we
believe will be when properly plac
ed before our people. In fact,
Americus can hardly afford to lose
this road. It is onougb that we
have lost the Buena Vista road,
without having another road to pass
us by on the other side. A road
from Smithville to Preston would
mean the loss of a large portion of
our cotton trade and the building
up of Smithville, not probably as a
rival, but as a point that would
greatly injure our local trade.
There should be no delay in this
matter, but our citizens should at
once call a meeting, appoint proper
committees and go to work.

Tbe Atlanta Constitution, in an
article on “Democratic Blunders,”
says:
The republican party, ns haa
been demonstrated at more than
one eleetion, has no hold upon the
country. Its popularity Is a thing
of tbe past, and tbe fact that the
people allow it to go on plundering,
is duo, in eur opinion, solely to the
blundering of tbo men who aflect
to lend but who really misrepresent
the democratic masses. There is
great versatility in this plundering,
and a certain talent implied in the
eapaeity for blundering; but in our
opinion the time has come when
the people should selzo their would-
be leaders by the ears and set them
right.
This is all veiy true, and vet tbe
Constitution would have tbe party
to continue in the greatest blunder

Tbe Rate Catting In Chattanooga-
Ciiattanoooa, Teon., March A—
When tbe announcement was made
in the eity yesterday that the mer
chants’ despatch bad made a re
duction in freight rates from Ne^
York,which placed Chattanooga 4n
the same basis with Atlanta and
Mobile, It was supposed to wj i
bona fide redaction. Tbe develop-
menu to-day show that such was
not the case, but it was a cut in
rates and grew out of a fight- be
tween trunk lines. The discovery
created no end of excitement in
tbe city among tbe merchants and
railroad circles. Tbe Merchants
Dispatch reduced the rates 30 per
cent below tbe old rate. Tin* East
Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia
railroad hearing of the cut imme
diately announced a reduction of
36 per cent below tbe former rates
on all classes of freight from New
York and other eastern cities to ail
southern points. The officials
state that they will meet any re
ducliun made by the other lines.
The Western k Atlantic railway
failed in some »ay to hear of tbe
reduction of tbo East Tennessee,
Virginia k Georgia, and thinking
they woqld catch the latter road
napping acot out the announce
ment that they had reduced their
rates thirty-five per cent, the
same as made by tbe East Tonnes
sec, both of the above roads having
put tbe rates below tbe competing
lines. It will force the latter to
cut again. A prominent railroad
official stated to-night that lie
thought the cutting would contin
ue until tbe rates would be literally
nothing, and they would then be
made anew. He thinks the fate of
tbe southern pool is sealed, and it
will collapse In a short time.
