A BAD SHOWING FOR Till BX-SPXAKBB>
BIDS OF TRB CASK.
It U often remarked, says a
Washington special, that Keifer’s
constituents bare the idea- that be
is the victim of some rascally news
paper men, and that their devotion
to him is rapidly increasing. If
there be any truth in this, the Ohio j
people have peculiar ideas ot mor-:
al*. Keiter swore that he was not
in Boyton's office on the night of
March' 1 last, and aix witnesses j
have sworn that they saw him j
there. He swore that be did not
pay the hoard bill of one of bis
witnesses, and it has been shown
that lie lurnished the money with
which that hoard account was set
tled. Of two witnesses whom he
has brought forward to corroborate
bis original story aoout Boynton’s
attempt to corrupt him, it has been
shown that one has been indicted
for burglary and the other has been
in prison for false personating, nnd
is, or has recently, been the keeper
of a disreputable bouse. Of this
latter (Elder), Kt-ifer swore that
he had only a casual acquaintance
with him, anil never recommended
him for office, and didn’t know he
had a bad reputation. Brewster
Cameron has produced a note from
Kcifer introducing Elder as a man
be was well acquainted with, and
reliable (nail respects,and it would
be a personal favor to Keifcrif
Cameron would attend to him and
Cameron told Keifer afterwards
what Elder's reputation was. This
is only a partial list of the instan
ces in which Keifer has betrayed
bis constitutional repugnance' to
anything like tbe truth. The com
mittee on Accounts has been hold
ing back ita report that it might
not damage Keifer in the present
trial, for it has been Keifer, and
not Boynton who was on trial from
the start. When that committee
submits its report of Keifer’sgross
and unblushing nepotism compli
cated with lying when questioned
about it, anil the Hopkins commit*
tee submits its report of the cur
rent investigrtion, Kei’er will have
a publio record that will be simply
unrivaled among ex-Speakers of
(be House from the foundation of
the government, nnd il ids consti
tuents return him to Congress
next fall with an moreased majori
ty, tbe missionary societies will
have revealed to them the location
of the most benighted lircihcrn in
the world.
