With all due defemnoe to your worthy compositor, I beg leave to correct a few worda in my last week’s letter. In apeaking of the ■treama I wrote “Ocopilco.*! The section onj the Thomaaviile road I dubbed “New Africa,” and the distance it only 80, not 50 aa print ed. The farms were '‘subdivided,' and nvt "subelituled.” I simply ask to be allowed this explanation, lest some one should be tee-totally abscrateliuatcd trying to get the hang of my letter. A aad occurrence cast a shadow over our quiet community Friday. Mr. Aaron Daniels, blacksmith, who lived two miles west of here, waa found dead in the woods near his home. He had been engaged in hauling Tails, and Joe White, who bad called on buainess, went out to sec him and was horrified to find him lying stark dead on the cold, wet ground, near a pile of rails, one ol which be bad in hia hands when the deadly shaft struck him. The alarm spread rapidly, and soon a crowd oi sympathizing neighbors gathered at the spot to keep their sad vigil until the ar rival of the coroner and a physi cian. Aoout 10 o’clock at night Dr. Tip Watkins arrived, and partoftbejury who were summoned by the coroner. As the latter did oot put-in appearance, runners were dispatched in search of him. When found lie was at a neighbor’s house asleep. All this time the corpse was liiug in tho edge of a flat witli the water standing near him. After sumo discussion the coroner was prevailed upon to go to Iho scene of saducss, and after an examination l<y the physician, and the usual preliminaries, the Jury brought in a verdict of death, caused by a|ioplexv. Daniels came to this county a year or so ago. He had been mar ried, but Ids wife deserted him, carrying with tier his two little children. Coming here he married a respectable widow lady, and by bis sterling qualities he soon gained the respect and good-will ot the country at largo. Hia Widow is almost erased by the Unity* blow, and many friends mourn his un timely taking otf. Mr. llute Studslill, of Brooks, was recently burned to death in aD old sedge field. The neighbors gathered in to repair tho fence, and Will Walker cut down a tree which struck another and was thrown off, striking Walker and catching bis head between the fall ing tree and a log, causing death. Such is tho report brought me by a reliable gentleman from that sec. tiou, to-day. Tbc Messrs. Mnllls, two hard working young men, had their house, which was nearly built, burn ed together with a year’* supply of provisions, a few days since. Hatciikb Station, Oa., March 25 Perhaps an occasional item from this (Quitman) county may be read with relish by some of your many readers, as it bails from the clastic Chattahoochee with ita “ups and downs.” Our Suparioroonrt Las Just clos ed its spring term under the able, upright and impartial jurisdiction of Judge J. T. Clarke, than whom a better Judge does not grace the beach of the state. Tbeic was but little criminal matter tried. Two cases of simple larceny, which were among ilia civil rights persuasion of American citizenship; one being Ing brigad* - one case of fine and jail. One Mr. Harris, who under bond, charged with was released by''the grand jnry. Qsite an interesting case against the Central Railripitd sod Banking Company was tried, which grew out of the terrible passenger train wreck near Georgetown over a year ago, brought by Misa Georgia Saunders, of Terrell eonnty, Oa., a victim of the wreck. OoL J. H. Guerry made a masterly effort for the plaiotifi, and a verdict of twen ty-five hundred dollars was ren dered by the jury in Ihvor of the plalntlfi, which seemed to be satis factory to the plaintiff and the peo ple. The defendant promptly mov ed for a new trial, the beating of which was set for a future day in Cuthbcrt. During the court tbe writer met With citisens from every section of thuoounty and interviewed them with reference to their forming prospects. AU,report tbe season's* backward, poor oat crops, plenty corn ior home conanmption, meat scarce for want ol liogs, but good supply of stock hogs for tbe next time. Our county Is on a boom for improved hogs and Jersey cattle. I recently visited tbc stock form of Mr. J. C. Guilford, one of onr citizens, who ifgrailually merging bis hithorto cotton farm into stock- raising, and was especially delight ed on inspecting his milk-bonsc. He keeps but one milk cow for bis own o«e; which yields daily about thirty-five pounds of rich milk, fr >m which is extracted about two audone-balf peundaof gilt-edge but ter. This description is not t painted one, bat a reality. Mr. G, has stock for sale and may be ad dressed at Georgetown, Ga. Ho has been offered and refused five hundred dollars for this cow, but slio is not for sale; tier posterity, is on sale. Rain, rain, all plowing ia blocked, torn planting not finished. The Tilden boom and protection ists arc not very popular in our county. I’.'oC W. A. Hill, a native ol tbc county and a son of J. N. Hill, has flourishing and remunerative sobool at Grange Hill; he is a suc cessful educator and deservedly popular. Trupk farming Is decidedly on tbe wane here. Our county baa turned out, this spring, four full fledged physicians, viz: G. W. Lewis, W. T. Carter, M. Haines and 8. A. Crumbly; all young men. More anoo. Quitman. esty and integrity. He waa a State officer during tbe period of the fa mous investigations and’Impeach* monte, and no breath of suspicion waa heard against him; aad being honest and capable, why should not the poltoy of promotion be ea- tablished at ones, and a worthy man be assigned to a place which he would honor and dignify? The Stated money would be Mtfo in hia .hands, and the a trust would be returned, leaving those hands as clean as now. The writer earnestly hopes that be will be chosen, without opposi tion, to this high office. Wire Gram. HARDKMAN FUJI THEASlTtER. Lkesbuiuj.Ga., March 25th, 1834. Of tbirty-two criminal items only fonr related to the South. We do notaasail Northern civilization, but we do, insist that the number ot crimes of all kinds committed at the South la not greater In propor tion to tbc population than at the North. Although we have a large proportion of Ignorant negroes, the criminal statistics of tbc South ern States will compare favorably with those of any other section of tbe Union. There is too mnob crime everywhere, and the law is not enforced ns strictly as it should bo, but tbc cry against criminality in tho South is unfair and unjust. AhOTHEB SOUTHEH.V 0CTKA8R. HOW A (mown OY white ran* TREATED AN HONEST IXDt'STKIOCS NEOBO IN EAST DOUOIIKRTr. Altos? Hsdisn, . About three week* ago Silas Johnson, an Industrious i man, who lives abdnt five East of Albanr, had bis containing hia household aad corn and other provisicaa Set the year, consumed by fire. SQaa is tbe head of a large and depend ent family, and this misfortune fell upon him with ornahing freight. Everything he possessed lay b ashes before him—not a dust of meal for hia wife and children sac an ear of corn to feed his stack with—no shelter to protect Us family from the weather, nor moaay to employ help to hallil Ihalfima for potting seed In the groondtafl arrived, but hts hands could oak perform the work. He was broken up completely, and knew not which way to turn for relief. Ins thickly settled neighbor hood news of a fire spread* rapid ly f and in twslre hours it seas known for miles around that Site had lost by fire everything be pos sessed. Like all southern p, ‘ with a hatred fbr the negro whloh ia limitless (?) aad witn « fixed purpose's* adding still Anther to the misery of this poor, unfor tunate, helpless negro man, they arranged a plan—they concocted « scheme against him whieb will doubtless, a* wa unfold it, send a thrill of horror through tbe North ern heart and cause too bloody shirt to be suspended from tbe gabel- end of tbe moon. We call upon tbe bloody-Ehbt beavers In the Congress of the United States to have a committee appointed forthwith and send down here to investigate this dreadful outrage. Two years sgo the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway pur chased a strip of low marsh-land in the southern part of tbe city of Jacksonville which had been for veers an “eyesore” to the citizens ol this place. It is now probably tbe most valuable piece of property in Florida. Substantial wharves, extensive warehouses and a, hand some depot have been erected on the site. It is now the first Flor ida roil on whieb tbe majority oi tourists entering Florida steps. Us railroad tracks ran down to tbe head of the wharves, and freight and passengers are transferred di rectly to or from tbe steamer.
