Dawson, May 13.—Through the Recoboee alteniion is asked to the feasibility of to constructing the street intersecting the northern portion of tbo city of Dawson, and running cast and west, that It may open up s more direct route to that portion of the city, so that persona who are living in til .* neighborhood of tbo Roberts place may be saved the inconvenience of going a mile out of their way to reach the city, and, besides, properly holders who pay their proportion of the city tozca are directly interested In this matter, whicli has become an nr gent one with them. No gieat an amonnt of ex[ienses need be in curred, as but little grading la to be done. A bridge would have to be constructed over middle Chicka- sawhatehee creek, which would cost but little te the city. We respect fully bring this matter before the oily fathers of Dawaon, as we have been requested to do so. Dawson has a roost pleasant re sort now for those who in tbo snitry summer months like a plate of ice cream or a drink of iced lemonade. 0.1. Chambers has fitted up a cosy little tent upon a side street near Ills confectionery, whicli is throng ed with lads, and lassies of this de- lightiul city every afternoon. Ira is one of our must sterling young men and deserve), success. Capt. -O 0. Robinson is one of the moving men of this community. Uislightning rods and nil appurten ances conneeted therewith arc manufactured hero. Ho has five wagons out till I lie time, and bis sales are immense. He is also in the livery stable business, and is a first best man In ids knowledge of horses. Randolph Court up to this tim* lias been represented by two of our most proml nenl lawyers, the able So licitor-General, Col. J. H. Guerry, and Col. L. C. Hoy I. Col. Hoyl is a repicscntatire man in his profes sion, ar.d for a term of years repre sented tills Senatorial district in tho Legislature. As a gentleman he has the esteem of all who know him. The marshal of this city, D. G. Trammell, is a good one. Offend ers bide out and soek a refuge as far from him as possible. In a ne gro disturbance here a few days ago, a violator of the law was ar- ares led by him and fined by the mayor $42 or fifty days on the chain-gang. Tho negro arrested was a had ono, but Trammell bad tho nerve to bring him in. In con neotion with this matter we state bat few appeal cases come before the council, bis honor, the mayor, (and one of the best) being sus Mined in almost of bis rulings, Tbo New York Marine Bank, which recently failed, had as a de positor, Mr. J. W. Wooten, of this place, in the amount of $4,300. We are all sorry for the loss of Mr. Wooten, but as he is a man of great business nerve and Industry, we know that be will soon recover from bis loss. Prominently spoken of here for tho Legislature is Col. T. H. Pick- ctt. Ho Is ono of our most solid men, and stand* high in bis pro fession as a lawyer. Almost every one that your reporter meets wants Tom Pickett to represent Terrell in the next Legislature. Let him say the word and he will go. The centennial oelebratlon of the Methodist Sunday acliool here on last Sunday waa a decided success. The recitation of one of the scholars, Miss Helen Parks, was admirably done. The speeches of Cols. Hen derson and Wimberly gave satis faction, but tho crowning beanty of the whole was in the collection for dsstitnte places without Sun. day schools, wbieh was a large one. Jo Scott, of your city, “took in” thin place hut Tuesday. Brimfull ot business, he was on the “ran” all the time. The Bank of Ameri cas has no one more faithful than lie conneeted with it. Wo tell the friend* ot tho Recob. deb, and they are legion in this section, to make themselves at home in the Recobdeb ofllco when they visit Amorlous, “ono of tho gems of Southwest Goorgia.” Wc wish them to see the admirable ar rangements conneo.ed wi'b the pa per that so msny retd and appre ciate here and elsewhere. The many friends of Hon. J. O. Parks will be delighted to know that this gentleman is now often seen upon our streets, though he is still on bis crutches. Hi* long ab sence from tbo active pursuit* of life has been sorely felt by msny of us. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Merrell Callaway here extend to each of them their warmest sym pathies in the loss of theirdanghter, dear little Bell, bnt we are consoled by the tuonght that she is well fit ted for an angel in heaven. W. K. P. qi'ITMAX COUNTY Hatcbeb Station, May 18—A press of busines both puhlie and privato prevented my usual letter last week, which I regretted, though unavoidable. The refreshing showers of rain lost week have given new life and vigor to all vegetation, tbo oat crop and gardens are rudeoming their former growth, tbo former, howev er, cannot mako more than half a crop. W. M. Dozier, W. J. Jor dan and W. Moore have some fine oats, yet far below tbeir cxpecla tion when planting and fertilizing so heavily. Tho corn erops which have bad an unhealthy color from unfavorablo weather, aro rapidly assuming a healthful green and now promises well. The cotton crop in also looking unusually well under tho very favorable weather which has prevailed for tho past two or turce weeks and chopping is far advanced. The bulk of the crop will be ehopped this week. With day la bor in abundance, fine weather, tbs workingfarmor* will soon have tbeir crops beyond the injuries usual from grass and weeds; all things considered, the present outlook for farmers it encouraging. The fine 'weather has dried off tho creeks, swamps aud made fish ing a pleasant sport for the “always got-time-cnough” fishermen; the banks of tbeorceks are well shaded and furnish just enough mosquitoes to keep one from going to sleep and losing a nibble. Somo of the Osbermen make tho sport profita ble. Mr. Joe Oliver, near Cotton Hill, with bis sons in one night, with set books, caught about forty pounds of channel cat, some of which wero very large and fine. These using trot lines are hairing fine success in Patauis. Miss Willie Dozier is off on a pleasure trip through Middle and Eastern Georgia, visiting relatives and fnonds, and will take in the beautiful sea-board city of Savan- nab. Prof. E. A. Reese's school at Georgetown is rapidly growing. Prof. It. is the right man in the school room. Miss Emms .Ionian will close the first term of bor school on the 22nd inst. with an ex hibition at night, to which ail are invited. I have not seen the pro gramme, but am assured thst some thing rich is in store lor those who attend at Morris Station on that night Owing to the busy season among farmers, news is very scarce. Sbrop, of the Kufaula Bulletin, JOLLY JOHNPBEEYILLE. JoiiNt>aKKVii.i.E, May IS Wc made a flying visit to Dawson to day. We mw but little or nothing doing with the merchant*. Whit tling, marbles and otieckers receive all the sparo time. W. A. Janes had Just returned from the great sale at Sheffield, Ala., and was the center of attraction, and I know was asked the same questions at least a thousand times before nine o’clock this moining. We found the crops on the road ■mall, but in good order. Every body through planting and have started to ohopplng. The corn all •mail, wo think for the middle of May. Tbo oat prospect is very good; the rain on Thurday last im proved them considerably, and with one more good rain the last of this or the first of next week they will be Mfe and will be more than an averago crop. A few have put in a few potato slips and all bands wilt bo ready when it rains •gain. Old Charlie, our good old family borae for the past 10 years, is now lying at the point of death sod no hopes of his recovery. He 1 horse, 'tis truo, and, oh! how aad it is for some of us to sco him die. We always felt safe behind old Charlie. Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Wo aro glad to report Mr. Kim brough improving slowly, and it ia tbo wish of ad that be will soon be out again. Dr. W. C. Paschal and lady, of Dawson, are visiting him this week. Mr. Tom Simmons and lady, of Simmonsburg, speut last Sunday in the villc. Dr. Copoland and lady spout to day with us. Mayob. feels lonely sinee the press conven tion left. ‘ Qvimax. ACAimT To all wbnsrcsnfl'enoff from the errom sod indisentioDs of roots, nervous weakness, sarljr decay, loss of manhood, Ac., I will send a reoips (bat will ears you, FREE OF CHARGE. This grant remedy was discovered by a missionary in Booth America. Bcodserif addressed envelope to the Rkv. Joseph T. Ixusx, Station O, AVts York C’lfy. Asa contrast in the line of Presi dents Arthur is perfect, ne Is the first and probably the last of bis kind. You can turn from Jeffer- ■on in bis long, worsted stockings and gray homespun anil, receiving Mr. Merry, the British Minister, to Arthur in tho latest personification of tbs fashion plate, and muM on the super-or evolution in Presi dents. “When I boo magnificent dandles yawning out of White's” ■ays Thackeray, “or caraeoeing in in the park on ahining chargers, I like to think that Brummeii was the greatest of them all, and that llrummell’s father was* footman.” So when you read of tbo dandified splendor, tho extra bath tubs, dressing rooms and the superflui ties of the Arthurian episode you, too, like to think that tbo finical being requiring so much elegance was never the choice ot the country never could be; that the people with good-natured forbearinee wait for hie exit from a scene where ho has been chiefly conipie uous by his sumptuous dresti g and where, too, like the revival of an old sequence in former stage management; after a tragedy earn* the farce—or the Arthurian admin istration. Dr. James Cox, of Sydney, Aus tralis, was recently in reoeipt of a dead animal which ia called by the local press a sea serpent. It was found lying on the beach. And was perfectly white in color, though la sea water bias bands appeared along its aides. Its skin was like the skin of a snake and its tail and vertebra) like I hose of a fish. mrn -• <— On the S2d of April a remarks- ble frost visited Southern Europe. In msny parts of Switzerland the thermometer fell many degrees below zero, doing great damage to crops and destroying, it is believed one.thtrd of tbo vintage. In France, along tho Saone Valley, the damage to the vines is estimat ed at several million* of franc*. Why Farmers Hhenl4 Favor Tariff Reform. Xinmuh Hews. Representative White, of Minne sota, ono of the Republicans who voted for the Morrison bill, baa published in the CongreMtonal Record his reasons for supporting the bill against the withes of his party associates. The reason* are calculated to oonvinoe the farmem of the Northwest that Mr. White represented their interest*. Mr. White ssy* that he wante the reve nues of the government rednoed, and that he It not one oftbotewhe say that a reduction of tho tariff will increase the revenues, and la tbo next breath aeaert that the re duction made in 1883 has already red teed the revenue*, and will re duce them further after a Rule time. He wants it understood that he is not quite so inconsistent as that, although some of the protec tionists made ti Mr. Gough on Kilk flats. "It would be no violation of tbs com- msodasnt,” said John B. Googb, “ifs sun were to tell down tod worship tbs silk hst, for it is not mad* in tbs likeness of any thing in heaven, or on earth, or u tha waters which arc under tha earth." Resides it hesls the head and causes tho hair to fall off. Porker’s Hair Balaam will stop that aad restore the original eolor to gray or faded hair. Not oily, not a dye, bens Acini, deliciously perfumed. A per- feet hair drtsaiag. 30c. Alt di that sort ot an argu ment daring the tariff debate. Mr. White want* the surplu out cT, bccau*o if the money goe* into the Treasury it must be paid out. If tho surplus wero allowed to accu mulate It would not ba long betas there would be a scarcity or mousy, and the busines of toe country would bo embenassed. The sur plus would have to go to the pay ment of the bonds because in ow other wsy could It be used. Mr.' White doesn’t want the bond* paid because their payment would break up the national banking system, which is admitted by both parties to be the best the country I a* ever bad. Ho doesn’t agree with the protectionist* that the protective system is the greatest possible Mes sing to the farmers. In foot, be does not regard it as a blessing to them. The manufacturing interests do not make a notne market for tbo pro- , ducts of the farmers. Tho prices ' ol wheat, corn, pork, beef, etc., fa this oountry aro regulated by the • Liverpool market. The only dif ference in the prices in title coun try and Liverpool is made by freight,' storage, Insurance) and handling charges. It it the sheerest nonsense to say that protection bonoOts the farming otaes to the extent of a cent. But while the farmers are furnishing the mono- fauiurers their bread-stuffs much cheaper than she English manu facturers can obtain them, they are lorced to pay for manhiaetuVed goods from 40 to 60 per cent more than the English former* have to pay and more than they would have to pay if there wero no protective tariff. Mr. White says the formers ol tho Northwest found no fault as long at the money was needed by tho government, but that now when the money is not needed he waste it left with tbo people. How mneb it ie needed in his section is stiowa by tbo fact that since the farms were opened in Minnesota they have on an average, obanged hands twice. High rates of interest paid to Eastern capitalist* and high j rices paid for the nccctsarie* of ire on aocount of tbe protective system have' made bankropte of two sets of farmers and promises vo bankrupt the third set Mr. White’s reasons ought to be plaoed in tbe bande ol every facta- er In the country He ebows np the ielqnltiee of the protective sys tem ao far ee it applies to the farm er*, and makes It dear that they are being robbed for the benefit Of the protected monopolies. What She Learned In Geography. Elizabeth I* a Buffalo girl about eight yearn old. When naked how far she bad got In her geography lessons, the little woman said: “We are ia the Alps Dow. And what do you thlnkf - Tha girls ’ there wear abort red skirts and a kind of green Jacket laced In front and behind, with puffed sleeve*. I don't Just remember What kind of stockioit* they wear, bat I think they ere blue." “Well,” exclaimed ibt paralyzed parent when she could recover breath, “bnt where ar* tbe Alpe, child?” U I don't know,” was th* artless response “It doesn’t say anything about that,”—Buffalo Commercial. From an agricultural exehanga we learn a new kind of potato 1e nailed tbe “KeUbr.” It is proba bly a small potato, and one that is vsry much subject to the rot.— Exchange. Tbe Masons of Philadelphia have the flneet temple in tha world, end it Is said to be the only Masonie building in the world that is given up entirely to Msoonic uses.
