the house accompanied by another

saw Emma Shipp with an axe try

As fourteen laps made a mile,
it will be seen that Seel lacked only
one fop of completing fifty-nine
miles when the bait was ordered.
Seel was fresh and vigorous when
the raiu ended, and the general
opinion Is that he could have easi
ly walked two hours longer l'tho
necessity occurred. The winner of
the contest is nn employe of E. VV.
Marsh, und came from Germany to
Atlanta a few years ago, walking
from New York to this city, and is
said to have covered tbe distance
between Augusta and Atlanta in
with her teeth while warding of three days. The gate receipt* arc
of tbe blow ol the axe with her
left arm. She turned and run in
under the axe and eut at her per-
suer. Sbo again ran off and a
second time was persued anil ran
in upon her antagonist who struck
at her with the axe aa she cut with
her knile. As they came together
the axe dropped toward tbe ground
anil Emma Shipp fastened her
teeth in Mollie Nelson’s shoulder.
She think* she then made three cuts
with her knife which ended the
fight.
Emma Shipp was’foundto be cut
in sevoral places and died from the
effects of her Injuries. Mollie Nel
son left the place from fear of harm
from Emma’s friends and made her
way to Chattahoochco county.
Here she was arrested by Sheriff
Harp who delivered her to Deputy
Shorlff Holder. She was carried
lieforo Judge l’careon and waiving
a commitment trial was sent to
jail to await her trial at the next
term of Stewart Superior Court.

Some brute has been slandering
the good women of Quiucy, and
Brother Wheeler, of the Journal,
comes to their rcscuo as follows:
"A roan who will make mean ie
marks about womankind is vile at
heart, and unfit to associate with
decent men and woman. Wc
would rather associate with a re
putable gambler, a whole-souled
drunkard or a generous-hearted
thief than with the vile creature
who is eternally makinz mean re
marks about women. No habit so
quickly and so surely proclaims
a man as an irreclaimable brute as
that of the meanly slurring woman
kind. We doubt if the world was
ever so full of good and virtuous
women ns it is to-day. And we
car. give a good reason for our lie
lief. Woman’s condition in the
world I* constantly improving.
She is continually taking a higher
nnd yet higher position; constantly
becoming of more importance and
all the time weilding a greater in
fluence; and thus gaining a more
nearly complete and absolute con
trol of her own person. And with
this absolute control comes perfect
chastity. Every woman is born
virtuous. Women are naturally
and instinctively virtuous; and as
they become more nnd more, per
fect masters of their own persons,
•hey live nearer to their own in-
stinctlvo ideas of truth and good
ness. This is why wc say that tne
world was never so full of pure
women as it is to-day. And our
argument Is unanswerable."
