The steamship, Great Eastern,
has been chartered by an enterpris

a hotel next fall at the New Orleans
Exhibition. Such a practical and
sensible Idea should at once be
seized by the Government and ap

might sink during a heavy gale at
sea would be perfectly safe riding
at anchor in the harbor* ot our
fashionable seaside resorts. They
could also be used to intimidate
rapacious landlords into subjection.
Aside from the accommodations
tbtse floating hoatelries might
afford a grateful public, the reve

the oountry that the Government
would' lie enabled to purchase all

Mr. Lewis baa done more for the
South than any Northern writer,
for he has written things as they
are, alter carefully investigating
them. He ha* soetned to appreci
ate the efforts of the Southern peo
ple to advance the interests of their
section, and baa carefully taken in
to consideration all the social ele
ments of our society. In discus
sing the negro problem we think b*
has drawn the negro character a
little too strongly, and his charges
against them are a little too sweep
ing. It should be remembered,
however, that he I* a Northern
man, used to tbc push and energy
of white laboreri, and we confess
that the indolent, careless nature
of the Southern negro is calculated
to disgust a man who has been used
to energetic, careful work in the
shop and field. That much, too
much, of Ida delineation of the ne
gro character is true we must ad
mit, but there are many exceptions
to the rule be has laid pown. We
know ot many honest and industri
ous negroes who are making money
and raising decent families. Much
of the negro’* indolence and disre
gard of contracts is due to the
white planters, who in their efforts
to run large plantations have placed
themselves in the power ot their
laborers, and who often urge the
negro to violate a contract with a
noighiio.-. The farmer who runs
a small force and depends more
upon himself than his laborers will
have little trouble with the labor
problem.
