all the time, and we will make it up
to you by giving you a better pa-
per the succeeding weeks.

The Conference.
The delegates of tbe Americus
District Conference ot the M. E
church began coming in Wednes
day, and by Thursday noon were
all in and assigned accommoda
tions. Two meetings were held
yesterday, but no business of inter
est to the publio was transacted.
Outside of meeting hours the dele
gates walk over the oity and ad
mire its beauties. We bid them
welcome.
Americus & l.nmpkln H. It,
The survey of the Americus,
Preston and Lnmpkin Railroad has
been completed, the surveyors have
made their profiles and estimates,
and are now ready for the real
work. Three lines were run from
Americus to the Webster line, hut
the route to lie selected will de
pend somewhat upon the amount of
subscriptions along the several
lines. The directors meet in
Americus to-day, for the purpose
ofeflTecling an organization, after
which the subscription books will
be opened, and as soon as a suffi
cient amount is subscribed work
will begin. The incorporators have
made no blow, but have quietly and
practically gone to work to perfect
tbeir arrangements, and we have
every reason to believe that the
road will soon be built.
The Bicycle Bace.
The audience which greeted tbe
bicycle riders Wednesday night
was not as laigc as was expected,
but tbey fully enjoyed tbe sport of
the evening, and many remarked
that it was far ahead of a walking
match.
The first race was a two mile
dash. For this there were four
entries, W. M. Jones, R. E. Byrd,
John Sheffield, and John Hall.
Tbe Judges decided that John
Sheffield wen tbe race in 9 minutes
and 55 aeeonda. Hia first mile was
made in 4 minutes and 56 j seconds.
Hall’s trainer claim* that he won
tbe race, but a majority ot tbe
Judges said no. Mr, Wooten, one
of tbe Judges, made a minority re
port in favor of giving tbo race to
Hall.
In the hour race there were three
entries, Byrd, Jones and Sheffield.
Soon after the start Byrd fell In
turning too short. Jones, being
close behind, was compelled to run
into the railing, where he bent, the
right pedal to that he could hardly
turn it. While fixing it ho lost
several laps. Alter completing his
fiist mile Byrd withdrew, leaving
Jones and Sheffield to finish. The
race was very exciting between
these two tbe first fittccn minutes,
as Jones worked the wheel for all
be was worth to make up his lost
laps. It was unavailing, however,
for Sheffield clung to h'm until tbe
hour was up, winning tbe race
with a score of 10 miles and C laps.
Jones made 9 miles and 13 laps.
Jones bad to make IT laps to the
mile, Byrd IT, Sheffield 16, nod
Hall 15, on account of difference in
tbeir wheels. This gave tbe little
wheeled boys a big advantage, aa
they could turn the corners much
faster than the large wheel ones.
Tbe Infantry boy* will not make
much out ot the race, but they
have the satisfaction of knowing
tbev gave their friends a pleasant
evening.
Macon’s Big Day.
Macon is to have a big day on
the 4th of July. An extensive pro
gramme lias been arranged, the
chief features of which will be the
state walkers nmtok in which walk
ers and wheelmen throughout tbe
slate are invited and expected to
compete. Ed. Smith, the winner of
the walk in this city, has sent his
name up as one of the entries in the
six-hour walking match. He says he
will give the boys n big tussle to
beat him, and says they will have
to make oyer thirty-six niilev. The
first prize in this race is $100 in
gold, and the second $50.
There will also lie astute bicycle
race of five miles, which will occur
on the mile truck. The prize is $50
in gold.
The other features of the day
will be a tub race «n the river, a
mule race under the management
of Mr. Dave Cromuliuc, and
wheelbarrow race under the man
agement of Mr. X. T. Johnson.
The admittance to tbe park will
he only 35 centa and no pass checks
The railroads will give low rates
for the occasion.

That two mile bieyolo race was
run ou condition that Xo. 5, on ac
count of size, was to score a mile
for 15 laps and Xo. 4 was to make 16
laps for a mile. Therefore,in 2 miles
Xo. 4 would have to gain 2 laps on
Xo. 5 to make an even race. When
Xo. 6 scored 30 laps Xo. 4 lacked
fully 20 feet ot scoring 33 laps.
They ran on 2 laps further and Xo.
5 was 15 leet ahead when time waa
called. The score lists say Xo. 4,
34 laps, No. 5, S3 laps, carefully
omitting to say that Xo. 5 made
his last scone fully 15 feet ahead.
The Judges gave the prize to Xo.
4 when it waa so plain that he lack
ed 15 feet of winning it.
