A Pleasant Home.
We bad the pleasure, last week,
of spending a few hours with Capt.
T. M. Allen at hts borne near this
city, and were impressed with the
beauty and convenience of his sur
roundings, and surprised that he
had been able to improve bis place
so much in so short a time. 8ix
years a^o he purchased the place,
which bad on it nothing but a plain
and substantial dwelling house,
without even a fence around It. In
that time be has put up convenient
outhouses, stables, cribs, a neat
paling fence, and has a fine orchard
of peaches, pears, plums and apples.

Oak CroTe Academy
This scbool,.conduotad by Capt.
G. M. Patterson, is located throe
and a half miles southeast of
Americus, and last Friday night
was the close ofthe term. Having
heard much of this school, we ac
cepted an invitation to witness the
exhibition in the evening. Arriv
ing at the house, we found it well
filled, a large number of ladies and
gentlemen from Americus being in
attendance. The exercises opened
with a most neatly worded and
well delivered 'salutatory by Miss
Bessie Allen, which would have
done honor to an}’ college gradu
ate. Then camo music and decla
mation* and recitations, all well
rendered and.appropriate to the oc
casion. While all were good, and
reflected credit upon both teacher
and pupils, the delivery of Masters
Furlow, Gatewood aud Alien was
exceptionally fine. These exercises
were concluded hv a valedictory
address by Miss Sheppard, beauti
ful in composition and effectively
delivered. V.’c should be pleased
to compliment some others, but
having no progiamme at band we
cannot remember names. At the
close of literary -zeroises the stage
was cleared, and then came a num
ber of small plays and dramatic
recitations. The little plays were
exceedingly well rendered, and the
fact that some of the parents took
part in them was oroof that the
people of that neighborhood take a
lively interest in the school. We
bad no idea that there was so mach
latent dramatic talent in our
friends Gatewood, Joiner and Hern
don, who acted as if they were at
home on the stage. So well pleased
were we with tbo plays that we
bad not “A Drop Too Much,” and
could have relished “A Little More
Cider.” The rendition of “The
Blaniao” by little Annie Allen was
a wonderful performance for one so
young. The interest of the enter
tainment was greatly heightened by
Prof. Hawkins’ orchestra and the
Americus Brass Band. And speak
ing of musio, wc must compliment
Miss Lena Ford, music instructor
of tho Academy, for the proficiency
shown by hor pupils upon tbo piano,
for their time was excellent and
showed they had been conscienti
ously taught.
And now, having spoken of the
exhibition, let us say a few words
about the school, its teacher and
its patrons. Thu building is one
of tho best in Sumter county, out
side of Atncricns. About two years
ago Capt. Patterson took charge
of the school, and to-day it ranks
as one oi the best in the country,
its attendance having run up to
about sixty. Ho is a teacher of
the good old school, who loves his
profession and conscientiously en
deavors to do his duty by all bis
pupils, and thus wins their respect
and love. The patrons of the
school embrace a number of the
most intelligent, progressive and
pros|>crous farmers in the country,
ami they take an interest and pride
in their school, as parents should,
and the consequence is that they
have a school of which to be proud.
A Miserly Woman.
On Sunday last Mollic Thomp
son, better known an Miss Stickncy,
died at her residence in this city.
For several years past she has lived
in a wretched little house and sub
sisted upon the charity ofthe peo
ple. After her death, in looking
after some papers, $760.75 in cur
rency and silver was found in an old
wasbstand drawer, and in various
places arouud the house were found
bolts oi sliccting and calico, a lot
of baby clothes, twelve pairs of
shoes which bad never been worn,
and a number of spools of thread.
Some of these articles bad evident
ly been hid away for a number of
years. The woman bad been sick
for a long time. It supposed that
the money and articles were left
her by her mother, who died about
a year ago, and wbo when living
occupied the house with her.
