Bill Judge Logan might go a
few steps further in his financial
and moral reform. Why not have
dry goods stores, groceries, meat
markets, bakeries, saloons, livery
stables, railroads and other
branches of business “conducted
upon the idea of spending rattier
than upon the idea of milking
money?” Then indeed would the
■nlllenluin lie ushered in upon gold
cii wings. Thon would the cotton
planter no longer he obliged to
mortgage Ids mule, himself and his
wile and seven children to get a
little corn and bacon to subsist
upon during the summer months.
Then would wc all live upon the
fat of the land, drcs.v in gorgeous
raiment and spend tho hot summer
months at the seaside and in the
mountains. Happiness would
reign supreme and misery be ban
ished from the earth.
But wc bad forgotten that J utlgc
Bleckley is a humorist as well as a
philosopher, with a vain of satire
in his humor; and it may bo pos
sible that alter all lie was slyly-
poking fun at the poor devils of
tbe country proas who are running
newK|iapers for glory in towns
which neither appreciate nor sup
port them. It may be that his re
marks were intended as a satire
u|hiii the ambitious politicians who
would use the newspaper us a lad
der upon which to climb into office,
and then kick the laddc: down. It
may he that the Judge took this
method ol slyly digging into the
libs of flint class of |H>opIc who
"patronize" the newspaper by tak
ought to go the planter who sends
to market the first bale of mature
cotton, and not to the one who
practices a deception. From the
action of the National Exchange it
is evidently the purpose to 1 give
honor to whom honor is due. The
cotton crop is late this year, and it
may be several days before the llrsi
balc is heard from.
Lieut. Greely. There was a mis-
understanding respecting ilia in
strut-lions which subjected him to
a great deal of criticism, until it
was shown that the rcsponsiniliiy
for it rested on Gen. Ilazen, Chief
of tbe Signal Service. It was in
tended that Lieut. Oarlington
should leave supplies at Littleton
Island as lie went nor'b.so that in

THE financial PROSPECT. I tbeGreely party.
Notwithstanding trade is now
very dull and money very hard to
gel, the prospects for the coming
fall ore very bright. A good corn
crop is already made and the pros
pects for a line cotton crop is very
flattering. Very little money has
lieen lion owed from the banks
during the summer and the plant
ers have run their plantations on an
economical aerie. The conse
quence is that they will have more
money left, after paving their
debts, this fall than they have had
for several yearn, and our mer
chant* arc confidently looking for
ward to a lively trade.

Because Mr. lllaine. the Repub

though it necessary to occupy four
long and dreary columns in signi

tion he so earnestly strove for,
Gen. Logan thinks it incumbent
upon him to inflict upon a suffer
ing country three columns of polit
ical platitudes in telling the chair
man of the committee that be was
only too happy to have been nom

His instructions, however, did
not direct him to stop at Littleton
Island, but to proceed northward
with all speed if tlie way appeared
to be opeu. When he readied the
island lie found there were no signs
of icc in Ids path to the north, and
fearing that delay might prevent
him from reaching Lady Franklin
Bay iic decided to push forward
and, in the event of failure, to
leave supplies st Littleton Island
on his return. His vessel was-
crused in the ice before he Imd
proceeded far, and consequently
no supplies were left at the island.
It non- appeals from Commander
Schley’s dispatch that if Lieut.
Garlington bad left supplies at
Littleton Island, tbe Greely party
would not have been benefited. In
coming south ia accordance with
his instructions, Lieut. Greely
landed on Cape Sabine, which is
separated from Littleton laland.by

slated ns a remarknblo fart by Com
mander Schley that the sea be

Lieut. Greely, having abandoned
his boats before reaching the cape,
had no way of getting to the is
